rx-8 = slow??

there are many competitive cars such as,
sti(300hp), 13sec -30,000$
350z(287hp), 14 sec -26,000$
evo8(271hp), 13.3sec -28,000$
s2000(245hp), 14.2sec -32,000$
rx-8(238hp), 14.5sec -26,000$

i understand that there are many different aspects of the car that makes what the car stand out from other models.

after reading posts from the forum, the fastest 1/4 mile time i found was 14.5. Isn't that kind of slow?? very slow for a 30,000$ sports car??
i currently have celica gt-s 6speed that does 14.8 in 1/4 mile stock and that's only with 180 hp. only 22,000$

i'm looking for a better car than my celica, and i love rx-8, but i don't know if i really like the power to $ ratio....
help me out here...

Having driven the Celica GTS, I can tell you, just drive the 8 one time and you'll cry the next time you drive the Celica. The powerband is incredible, comfort is astounding for a "sports car" the handling will keep you smiling even after you park it, and IMHO it's a much sexier looking car.

Keep in mind that the 8 is fairly new and aftermarket guys don't have a gajillion performance items for it yet. They have them for the Celica's but you still don't see too many melt your face fast celicas (I personally know of 3 that blew up and 2 of those three were completely stock).

If you're looking for a 1/4 mile drag car, you're barking up the wrong tree. If you're looking for an all around great car that can really flatten out the corners you're in the right place.

I second this. I've owned a 2000 Celica and it isn't really comparable. Test drive one - you'll see

Top gear track times RX8 = BMW M3.

Its a sports car that can do that whilst still having a decent ride wuality, seating 4 comfortably, decent service schedule and looks great.

In the UK the STi and evo are £5k more than the 8, yes are quicker, but I couldnt live with one day-2-day.

There is NOTHING in the UK for £30k or under (the 8 is £22k) which can match it.

Drive one and you'll see why it's such a wonderful beast. Paid 28K for mine and it's worth every penny. The handling totally makes up for the low-end power. Up in the 5's and beyond it's very quick. If 1/4 mile time is imporant to you, do not buy this car. If you want a sports car that can out corner the new 911 and all the others you listed in the G-test, plus has excellent smooth high end power, this ride if for you. (G-test info I got from consumer reports)

thanks autobahnRX8....
and all other people who reply, thanks for nothing.
like i said "i love rx-8". i don't dislike because its slow,
i was just asking if nayone had faster time in quarter mile..??!!
i drive celica and their engine is almost like rx-8, where the power-bend doesn't kick in until 6k rpm. and it only has 130lb torque. celica isn't fast compare to type r or rsx type s in 1/4 mile. but its fast once its rolling. the vvtl-i on celica is very different from hondas vtecs. so i would know where rx-8 is coming from.
and "3 guys blew their engine"-please stop the hate.
and don't get me wrong i've been rx7 fan all of my life.
and i'm looking forward to purchasing this car for autoxing, this is what i do most of the time since past 4 years. And in autx, you need some cars with good low-end torque. i know rx-8 handles awesome. but i could use some low-end torque

All too true. The handling on a celica can not even be compared to the 8. Once u drive the 8, u'll know why its worth 30k US. (i paid around 45k US [64k AUS] for it and i know its worth it.

If all you care about is 1/4 mile times, then the 8 is not for you. A car is not about a straight line drag race, there are other aspects of the car (like u stated). Comfort, style, looks, practicality and especially the handling makes the 8 a truly remarkable vehicle. I don't think any car in production can match it at the 30k range.

But of course, its up to individual preferences. if 1/4 mile is more important to u, then i suggest the EVOVIII, its the best value for 1/4 mile times IMO. it has great brakes and also great aftermarket products, but the looks just dun cut it for me.

I believe someone in this forum managed a 14.34 1/4 mile (dun think there was any mods). You'll have to search for it, sounds legit. but with a few k's of mods, u might manage to go under 14 if lucky .

and regarding autox'ing, this car performs quite well in autox due to its great handling and cornering. depends on the track of course. if there are alot of long straight lines, then this car wont perform as well as many others.

not to make you mad or trying to start something, but celicas are best front-wheel drive handling car as of now. and hotchkis celica with springs, sway, shocks, and tires, beat the porsche 911 in the track like nothing. if you don't believe me check out the hotchkis website.

You never asked if anyone had a faster time in the quarter mile than 14.5.. You asked if that was very slow for a 30k sports car. You came straight out the gate with a very biased opinion, so the other members here jumped on that and tried to defend thier point of view.

This is my take on the conversation and how it should have went:

You:
Hi, I was looking at the RX-8 and some other cars. However, I just feel that I can get a better deal for the same amount of money on a quicker car. I'm looking to get the most straight line performance for the buck. I'm also looking to upgrade performance wise from my current celica GT. Has anyone been able to beet 14.5 stock in the 1/4 mile? Is there any obvious reason the 8 doesn't get better times in the 1/4 mile?

Them:

Hi, The 8 was not designed as a drag car. There has been a time of 14.3 (i think) However, that person damaged thier transmission.

There are many other positive aspects to the 8 , other than it's 1/4 mile times. It's suspension is tuned for a road course yet provides enough comfort for the daily driver. It can compete on a road track with many other quicker cars.

It may be possible to get better 1/4 mile times with suspension mods. The current suspension may not apply all of the power to the ground. The car has severe wheel hop. This hop may also have been the demise of a few transmissions.

Good luck finding your car. Hope you find what you're looking for. Although, the 8 might not be it out of the box. If you're willing to invest some time and additional money you could have a great looking, great driving car that performs the way you want.

thanks for the info.
i apologize for the biased opinion. i would feel the same if you had said same thing about my celica. i know im getting the rx-8, because of the handling. And im new at rx-8 and this forum. That was one of my first post and all i got was BS saying that "then get something else" i was asking for your opinion and it didn't had to go in that direction.

I'm thinking you should stick with the Celica. Clearly you don't understand what the RX-8 is about.

Two things you should do:

1) Spend the next week or two reading threads on this forum
2) Test drive the car.

If you do both, I will not have to explain anything.

J,

You should really test drive the car as others have suggested.

After the test drive, you will either HAVE to have it, or hate it. Most likely it will be the former and not the latter. However, on your test drive, make sure you drive it like a high reving's engine and don't be afraid of redline. It sounds good up there.. and try to get in some curves!
