I really want my 3rd RX-8
I really want my 3rd RX-8
I bought my first one back in 2003, when I was a mere 23 year old tike. It was a brand new 2004. My first manual. I only kind of knew how to drive a manual, so I just went for it. Never regretted it for a second!
Then when my lease was up, I bought a 2006 Acura TL. Regret from day one. Hated that car, I was so miserable.
In 2007, I got another 2007 RX-8. Happiness had returned! Except gas prices were on the rise and it was not a fuel efficient car. But boy was it fun to drive.
In 2009 I ALMOST got my 3rd. But the deal fell through last minute and I ended up getting a new Camaro, then another new Camaro a few years later.
The Camaros were nice. I miss them from a practical standpoint. But I don't emotionally miss them like I do my RX-8s. Maybe I'm getting sentimental in my old age or something, but I've had several dreams about getting another RX-8. Including one where I changed the oil with full synthetic then after driving around for a while, was like "UH OH!" lol
I've been driving an SUV for almost 10 years now. And SUVs are what I drove before that first RX-8. I do need a truck based SUV for towing (currently an 08 V8 Trailblazer), but it SURE would be fun to get another RX-8. There are plenty for sale but most are so beat up. Its crazy seeing something that in my mind, is still a newish car, be so old and worn out.
I've also thought of getting a real cheap one and fixing it up, even pulling and rebuildling the engine. I had to rebuild a 200cc yard vacuum engine and this isn't much bigger :D hahah
Sadly, I don't currently have the time, or the money to get another one. But I sure would like to. I think in an ideal world, I'd like a full electric SUV - something like a rivian thats capable, not like a CRV... and a gas car for fun.
But, I can't afford any of this and the rivian's grille is exceptionally ugly and I hear they don't do carplay. In the end, my next car will probably be a 4runner. And who knows if I'll ever have "fun toy car" bandwidth

I sincerely hope you are able to get another RX-8. There are many reasons not to buy one, but so many more reasons TO buy one. It doesn't have to be your primary source of transportation. This is where the fun comes in. If you buy one in need of work, you are able to work on it little by little as time and money permit. You already have an emotional connection to the RX-8, now imagine getting one back on the road and knowing that car inside and out. The more you fix it and make it better, the more you love it. I bought my first new car in May of this year. A near death experience really changed my outlook on many things. I bought a 2026 Honda Passport Trailsport Elite. No its not cheap, but I love it and its an incredible daily driver. Did I need it? No. But it pulled on my heart strings and I went for it. You only get one go around here and I figured that I may as well. In 2015, I felt the same way you do now. I had sold an 05 RX-8 in 2012 that I bought as a lease turn it and it was my first. I sold it for a down payment on my house. I was missing the car badly and I sold a very nice Porsche 944 that I had to buy my current 04 6spd Base model. I have two other Nordic Green GT's that I bought after my Brilliant Black car. I didn't need them, but I was emotionally attached and I decided that I shouldn't deprive myself of things that make my heart happy.
Here's my Honda:
Brand new on the lot:

After I got it home:

A tank in the snow:

And again, I still have my RX-8's:

My old Rusty 04:

My Brilliant Black 04:

My nice Nordic Green RX-8:

Follow your heart and get what makes you happy. Spend time looking for the right one that you can fall in love with over again. Do not compromise and get what you want. You know there will be ups and downs, but don't let that deter you. The longer you wait, the more expensive they will get and potentially you may find it more difficult to find a clean example.
