Epitroch Sohn Adapter Installation Kits
RX-8 Drivers,
Epitroch is still in business with an updated website too. 2024 was a busy year for me due to aging parents and a killer day job. My apologies for late replies.
If you drive a Series I RX-8 and need a Sohn adapter and/or installation kit, please visit www.epitroch.com for information on the system and how to order one.
Thank you!

It's been 15+ years since I was on this site with my '05 (sold). It ran beautifully without a Sohn through 60k miles when it was sold. I recently acquired a mint '07 with only 14k miles. It'll be a low-milage, weekend garage queen. I've read some reporting the Sohn as an absolute necessity, others dismissing it. The story isn't clear to me. Can someone objectively help me understand the pro's/con's ?
Are the installation instructions published anywhere?

I have my 2nd 8 (04 GT) running with a Sohn Adapter for that extra measure of protection. The only age she shows is a cracking Airbag cover.
She is a Weekend/fair weather Queen as well, but I still drive it like it was stolen. Epitroch supplies all instructions for the install.

The story isn't clear like many other things about rotary maintenance, we don't have a lab and thousands of cars to track. But you shouldn't make this decision in a vacuum, it relates to other parts of the maintenance strategy. I use one because I want to run expensive synthetic oil for the bearings and I don't want to burn liters per track day of it. I also run long oil change intervals. You don't have to do those things, especially if not racing. Plenty of engines lived a long time without a Sohn, and modern oils are better all around than what was around when the RX8 was designed, so it's not a must. 2009+ cars can't have one at all and they're no more or less reliable than the early models.
Thanks, Loki. Copy.
Pretty cool to still see you here. I was just perusing our posts to this forum from '06/'08 when I had my last RX-8, an '05 GT. I loved that car! I bought this '07 two years ago on a sentimental impulse. It's been pickled since. I'm finally getting the bug to play with it. It's fun to revisit old posts to remind myself of the thought process and mod's that made that '05 so satisfying. In hindsight, my only regret was the noisy MS CAI. Otherwise, MS/Koni/RB' suspension, short-shift and rotor/pad mods made that one a dream. Debating how far to take this one. Somehow, the '07 feels stiffer out of the box.

There's a step by step guide in the DIY section.

The install is pretty straightforward if you've ever had to get to your engine hoses, SSV and Thermostat. I have large hands and due to this, those Solenoid Valves between the Intake Manifold and firewall are more difficult to get to than the Sohn install.
Also, good to see some of the guys still around...
Chiming in with my experience similar to Loki, running thicker synthetic in the pan and it's served me well for years now. It's also nice having an easy visual of oil consumption to top it off quick. I run the increased oil injection tables and like to keep an eye on it between lapping sessions, it's great for that.

Some old threads on that bottle if you want to search for them.
