Back In An RX-8!

I’m beyond excited to have another spinning dorito in my garage, I picked up this immaculate 2007 GT with 27k from the original enthusiast owners in AZ and drove it back to KS. Plan is to give it a thorough maintenance baseline and reliability upgrades, give it a thorough detail and professional ceramic coating, and enjoy it on weekends and date nights. Excuse the dirty pics, this is immediately after getting home.

Very Mint! Where did you get it in AZ?
Lots of garage time, obviously.

Besides UV damage, cars hold up well here.

Flagstaff, the car started life in FL and then the owner moved to AZ. Always garage kept, the black plastics that typically fade look really good. The underside looks new, zero rust which is fantastic for a DIY mechanic!

You have seen this, right?

RX8 Club’s recommended maintenance schedule, more comprehensive and proactive than Mazda’s schedule.

30,000 miles:
- Replace Ignition coils
- Replace Plug wires
- Replace Spark plugs
- Clean MAF (mass air flow sensor)
- Clean ESS (e-shaft sensor)
- Reset ESS profile
- Clean power steering connections
- Clean battery terminals and clamps
- Replace transmission fluid
- Replace coolant (Mazda FL-22 is highly recommended)
- Replace air filter
- Replace brake fluid (fluid in the brake lines AND the clutch line)
~$300 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

every 60,000:
...all 30,000, plus...
- Clean all chassis electrical grounding points
- Replace accessory belts
- Clean OMP lines
- Replace rear differential fluid
- Replace thermostat
- Clean / Straighten AC condenser fins
- Clean / Straighten oil cooler fins
- Inspect catalytic converter
- Clean / Inspect intake valving
- Consider / inspect all points in 90,000+ as well, many items fail early
~$130 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

90,000:
...all 30,000, plus any 60,000 not yet done, plus...
- Replace coolant bottle
- Replace radiator hoses
- Replace radiator
- Replace front O2 sensor
- Replace motor mounts
- Inspect clutch pedal assembly for flex / weld breaks
~$900 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

At 100k, anything original in the cooling system and any original cat are really suspect and failure prone. They represents the biggest threat to your engine. Replace.

BE SURE you get all RX8 recalls done, including the one for the fuel pump/fuel tank. All recalls would still be free work done by a Mazda Dealer, the recalls and your right to have them done dont expire, ever.
As for the first gen fuel pump, it is crap, and can fail under hard use, heat and age, leaving you stranded on the road. I replaced my Gen one fuel pump with a second gen RX8 fuel pump, a different design and far superior to the first gen fuel pump. The RX8Club has a a DIY on how to do this.

Also get that cat and the complete cooling system inspected, they are main risks to life of your engine. BTW, did you get a rotary compression test done?

I own a 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 (only 1000 made like this in the world) . I bought it new in 2008 and now it is insured as a Classic Car for 150% of what I bought it for new in 2008, full value, no depreciation. I have owned seven rotary Mazdas since the 70's; one RX3, two RX4, all three generations of the RX7 with two of those RX7 modified by Racing Beat for the track. I easily have over a million rotary miles on street and track . Yes I have upgraded and improved my RX8, cooling modifications with Koyo-Rad radiator, Pettit Racing closed system, Racing Beat hoses, low temp thermostat, oil cooler low temp thermostats , low temp fan control, upgraded water pump, ; Mazdaspeed CAI, high performance BHR ignition coils and wires, upgraded starter, performance Cat and mid-pipe from Rotary Performance, BHR clutch pedal assembly, Series Two fuel pump upgrade, new clutch and engine (from Mazda warranty, no cost to me), new engine mounts, and a few other things. I also upgraded to Conti Contact DWS06+ tires. I will be keeping my 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 forever.

I had my RX8 Ceramic coated in Late May. I did a ton of research, and I chose the top-rated Ceramic Pro 9H multi-layer process, which has a lifetime warranty, with yearly inspections and adjustments. I had it done professionally at TINT World, which has franchises around the country. Other detailers also apply the Ceramic Pro 9H. Trust me it was worth the cost, it is gorgeous. Of course they did a paint correction, took care of any imperfections and scratches, clay barred and polished the entire car, and applied the multi layers over three days. Then it takes two-three weeks for full curing to max hardness.

Cheers and best to you.

Absolutely, you posted that in my PM thread. But thanks!

I did not get a compression test done. Considering the condition of the car overall, if the engine goes I’ll either rebuild it myself or have it done. The car is nice enough and it was a fair price.
