Well I have to make a decision as to what car I want, and lately, all I have been reading about are problems with the RX8... problems with ECU check lights, A/C, transmission, etc... the list goes on. WHY SHOULD I BUY ONE? Other than the fact that they look great and they are fun to drive, where is the real advantage to buying one if they are going to have numerous problems in the NEAR future as it seems??

These are the RX8 forums. Go look on any other forum for a specific car, and there is a pretty damn good chance you will see the same thing.

 

True... but theres gotta be better reasons than that... at least i hope...

 

Because the car is well built, stylish, solid, ergonomically perfect, unique and an attention getter.
It has few real problems at all (especially compared to most first-year models) and only a small handful of people will ever actually experience any of those issues to begin with.

 

Sounds like a Toyota Corolla is the car for you

 

You should buy one because you want one; no other reason. If you're so worried about these problems which are no different in nature or quantity than you'll read about any other car on any other forum, then don't buy one; ride the bus.

No mass-manufactured car is perfect, but as an owner I can say this one is mighty fine. Mazda has been very good about fixing any problems that have cropped up so far. Once you own one, you realize how much thought and effort went into the design and creation of this car. This car was not designed "by the numbers" or by corporate suits cutting corners to maximize profit. It was designed by people who are true auto enthusiasts themselves and obviously take pride in what they design.

Very few people have the problems you describe; the majority are very happy with their car. The VAST majority. If you appreciate an automobile as fine art, appreciate a truly unique experience, want to be different and not look like everybody else, buy one. If you like to drive a beautifully balanced machine that corners with a grace few cars can match; buy one.

I could go on but there are so many positives, whatever few negatives that MIGHT be experienced (not necessarily WILL experience) are not nearly enough to negate the good.

This is a great car and one I'm VERY happy to own and drive.

Unlike the Corolla mentioned before, you should have an irrational desire to buy any sports car and then be looking for someone to talk you out of it. Trying to be talked into a car like this is starting from the wrong premise.

I have had my share of problems and have complained on this forum. However, I believe that they were 1) unusual, 2) eventually fixed, and 3) an expected price to pay for a first model year car.

Buy it, don't buy it; it's up to you.

 

You need to look at the problems in context.......

This is a 'first year' model, and the problems (so far) are REALLY trivial.

Over 10,000 miles, and no flooding, good mileage, (19+), and my only real problem was a dealer oil overfill - not bad in my book!

Your previous posts all indicate that you are considering a VWR32 as an alternative......take a read over on the VWvortex forum for some horror stories - one guy is on his THIRD transmission, all paid for himself (warranty denied!)......and that's on a SEVENTH year of production model! It's in it's last year, a new GTI is out next year, and it resembles an inflated Civic!

You need to step back and view both the candidates in a cold hard light....

Your seeing a few problems with a handfull of cars which are stedily being addressed by mazda.

They've prety much sorted flooding. The car is very reliable on average, and mazda top reliability in a lot of indexes.

My UK RX-8 is now over 10,000 miles. I'm getting the cat/exhaust replaced under warrently soon, other than that no problems.

 

Most of the problems with the RX-8 are new model bugs that have been corrected in current production units and can be fixed with older units.

I have 6K miles and zero problems. The air conditioning works fine in 90 degree weather, gas mileage now averages over 20, transmission is smooth as silk, etc.

4 year, 50,000 mile warranty is higher than most.

In my opinion, fun and also practical.

I have also owned multiple Hondas and Toyotas. Some were equally trouble free, some not at all. All brands have owners with negative experiences.

 

These forums WILL make you paranoid...no doubt about it.

But remember, the VAST majority of us that are not having any problems at all don't create threads entitled: Not having any problems.

All the problems you read about are also being addressed by Mazda and are typical of a new model car.

 

9 out of 10 people will voice their opinion about a bad experience while 1 out of 10 people will voice their opinion about a good experience. Also, IMO, bad things get more attention than good things and I'm sure some of the bad things here may be BS or embellished to sound worse. You are basing your opinion only on the bad things. I believe most of the people here haven't had any problems at all. Now, why else should you buy one? There are hundreds of threads here about how amazing the car is. Do a search for "the little things".

What you haven't mentioned is what you are looking for in a car. Have you narrowed it down to the 8 and are just hesitating from some of the stuff you've seen here or are you trying to figure our which cars to consider? What is important to you? 4 seats? Sports car? ????

After I got my first RX-7, I was hooked (as you can tell from my sig). Give the 8 a try and I believe you will be too. And if you get one and don't like it, simply sell it.

 

Don't buy the car. There are three in my small neighborhood now. My red, another red 15-20 houses one way from me, and a yellow 8 about the same distance in the other direction! I repeat don't buy the 8, they are fantastic cars but if you need to come to an 8 forum and inquire about why you should buy one, then you obviousely are hesistant, and don't really want one, and there are too many on the roads already. At least too many in my subdivision.

 

My RX-8 has had no problems.

It is unfortunate, but when someone has a problem, they will come here to either vent or ask questions about it. Which skews the way things actually are. If you have no problems, how likely are you to keep posting that you have no problems? Not nearly as much as if you had a problem.

With that said, someone posted a link to a 350Z forum. Man did I get an eye full. A lot more complains and a lot more issues being listed.

I honestly doubt you'll have much problems if you bought a RX-8, other than lousy mpg (17-22 range)

 

Seriously, this is one car that has had fewer problems and has fewer REPORTS of problems.

There are links for every mass-produced car out there. Go look at everyone's problems! This RX-8 had the fewest, though don't forget that this is a new car and it will have not as many reports, hence my comparison to the 350z. I wanted to compare the RX-8 to the 350 since they have been out a comparable time and are both new models, and are in the same price category (RX-8 being lower too!)

I make decisions and run my life by numbers. Some buy cars because of aesthetic reasons only. Figure out WHY you want a car first, then this will direct your decision.

I'm one of the people with Transmission problems... My car is waiting for parts and the transmission will be rebuilt in a few weeks.. I'll get a loaner car till that happens.. and you know what? I still wouldn't trade this car in for anything else. As others have stated, other cars have these same problems. the G35 also had transmission problems similar to mine where the tranny had to be rebuilt or replaced.

 

Every car has its issues. As an auto enthusiast you should expect to face some problems. So if you want one, get one.

What you buy is none of my bussiness. It's not up to others to convince you. If you can't convince yourself then forget about it.

I'm very happy with my 8. It was a no brainer for me. After the test drive I knew I had to have one. Buying it came natural.

HtownRX8, I have been looking for quite a while. When I found the 8, I went back to test driving the other cars I had looked at and telling the salesmen there "I am looking to buy a sports car. Tell me why I should buy yours over a Mazda RX8." In every case I get 'Uh' and 'Well' and long pauses with blank looks. The CAR will tell you WHY you want it. Your BANK account will tell you if you CAN get it. Only the research data you feed into your head and your personal feelings will tell you if you SHOULD get it. What ever your choice, I hope you are happy with and can live with. Remember, you are in a RX8 forum. Only a troll or the rare individual with problems will tell you that an 8 is a bad choice.
