Physics Of Racing - Lecture

Hey 8Club!

We all know there is no shortage of 'gate-keeping' when it comes to cool hobbies like cars and racing (subjectively), so I aim to share the little knowledge I have open and freely with any and all who are interested. No flames required and happy motoring!

I recently came across what I would consider to be an excellent lecture from Andre Marziali and thought that others would enjoy it as well. I think this can be appreciated by everyone and it's well worth the watch imo.

Starts to really get interesting around the 19:00 min mark. A couple spots I found of particular interest were around 24:00 min (pmi, pitch/roll/yaw, etc) and 50:00 min (lateral weight transfer, 'mid-curve' effects, etc). Always a ton of static/dynamic variables to consider. There's a part where he reviews a winning run from an autocross session and describes balancing the car on the 'edge of grip' which sounds awfully close to everything I've ever said about how jdm time attack and music performance goals are essentially the same; absolute control / knowledge of an instrument / tool and the skill / mastery of being able to manipulate an opportunity into an outcome.

'set and align angles for maximum grip on each axle and THEN adjust springs / bars for balance.' -Andre Marziali

hopefully you understand that it’s an iterative process, and then also that some competition rulesets are not an anything goes scenario. This then requires unconventional means to address the that which is not permitted conventionally.

otherwise been a fan of theirs for many years.
