Lada made Wankel engines for thirty years!

It's interesting they made them rotaries, I never knew that.
It sounds like they weren't very good cars to drive, though.

 

Someone's ******* the hell out of one in this video. Started making a big blue smoke cloud.

 

Helluva rabbit hole.

Mercedes made a fiberglass, rear engine 3 rotor that they claimed could go 280 kmh
and even experimented with a 4 rotor.
They gave it up because even Mercedes could not make them dependable.


There's also a Leno's Garage video with a C111, but it was after the Wankels with a V8.
They did talk about it's Wankel history.

 

I knew about Lada experimenting with the Wankel engine.
My very first car was a Lada 2101 "Zhiguli"... sadly not with a Wankel though, just a regular crappy engine

 

I had the chance to visit a collection of unique Mazda and cars with rotary engine, where a Wankel Lada parked next to a Citroen GS Wankel, a NSU and several Mazda. The Lada had a very unique engine design, did not look like a Mazda 13B.
