Mine is at 180,000 miles rust in the sills, 16 years of Pure Michigan winters, on the 3rd engine going strong. Anyone have higher miles?

180,000 is a lot especially in Michigan where about are you in Michigan

 

Unless they JUST swapped the 3rd in, 90k is a *bit* more reasonable

 

somewhere in between those two points is more likely, but it’s a valid point

still pretty lousy compared to my multiple-100,000+ mile piston engines.

I do recall one Renesis on here that still had the original engine with 160k or so, but those are fairly rare.

 

Still seems terrible. I have so many 160,000 plus mile piston cars and truck. Although I guess it depends on how they are driven. Seems like any small sport car doesn’t seem to last piston or rotary.
Lots of 350z and other low hp cars don’t make high mileage.

It depends on how stressed the engine is. Lots of Corollas, Chevys and Pickups with high mileages. They are used often but are not raced. Are there alot of S2000s that are 200k miles? BRZ? M3s?

 

pfff, a lot of those street cars aren’t that stressed

when I’m towing up the mountains I keep it floored and the trans is constantly shifting; screaming to redline until dropping in Drive until slowly bogging down, then downshifting to repeat the process again over and over. It’s taken a lot more abuse than most street cars, can assure you of that. When I bought it people in the racing forums swore the trans was never going to last 100K towing at both the total gross weight and tow weight limits. Pretty shocked myself that the trans lasted this long and the engine is still quite strong just doing the basic maintenance. Try to remember that my RX8 has mostly been a competition car all it’s life.

So I can appreciate that viewpoint, but plenty of Renesis engines died an early life whether stressed or not. Other than regular maintenance & general wear items; the electric radiator fan bearing wore out and the fan assembly was replaced, and it’s on it’s 3rd set of catalytic converters, which this last set I used high flow metallic cats to hopefully make that the last set ever needed. Multiple sets of tires, brake pads & rotors, spark plugs, engine/trans/diff oil changes, air/cabin filters. timing belt change, etc. It’s due for another timing belt change based on mileage, kind of expensive since the front of the engine has to be torn apart. Interior and exterior showing their age, but it still has a lot of life with mostly original parts.

119K miles runs fine. I do the post shutoff high RPM rundown. But in the past I had flooded it a few times. Resurrected it every time. Some of them were pretty hard (dozens of cranks lots of smoke). I now use SEA FOAM regularly in the brake booster line to keep it clean. I also use the better gas with additives.

As for other cars, I have owned a 2006 Mercedes E350 (70K miles before a motor pull to replace the IMS gear at the back of the motor then a few coil replacements, power steering pump and alternator never got to the bottom of the power drain or the intermittent transmission failures) and a 2015 BMZ 528i (80K miles timing chain guide fail). Both newer and less reliable.

The RX8 chews plugs and that stupid exhaust fan (which is ironically the same fan as the E350!). So for reliability get a Toyota (the SUPRA does not count)

I heard all the same crap about my ecoboost. I went from 302 498whp the first week I got it. Pull stuff way to heavy for a half ton through the mountains and drag race it many time a year. Probably 50-60 pulls. Most abused engine I have and it’s got 260,000 with just general maintenance. Only had to do wheel bearings, plugs a few times and coils once.

 

BRZ is a bad comparison - they've only been out for 9 years, so at 15,000 miles per year the average "high mileage" car would only be at 135k. Then again, those engines aren't popping left and right before 100k, so that's a good sign.

M3 depends on generation. E36 S52 had issues with cooling systems and the oil pump nut backing off and losing oil pressure. E46 S54 had issues eating bearings before 100k miles. E90 S65 had the same bearing issues, recommended replacement as preventative maintenance at 60-80k miles. Even so, 200,000+ miles is easy with normal maintenance, especially if you ignore BMW's 15,000 mile OCI recommendation and go 5-10k.

S2000 can easily do 200,000+.
