Hi, new RX-8 owner in the Waxhaw NC area. Looks like I need either a clutch or flywheel replaced on the 2009 Grand Touring I just purchased from a small local dealer. Clutch chatters/shudders on launch. It was suggested that it might be the flywheel.

Anyway, looking for a reputable local shop that knows the RX-8. Found one in Rock Hill SC (RX-7 World) but the reviews were not great.

If I end up replacing flywheel and clutch, what are folks thoughts on light flywheels and recommended clutch assemblies for purely street apllicaiton?

A clutch and flywheel job doesn't necessarily need to be done by a rotary specialist, though it's not a bad idea if you're willing to spend the extra money. I had mine done at a Mazda dealership while they were doing something else to the trans. I'm very satisfied with the Exedy stage 1 and BHR flywheel, though there are many alternative flywheels out there that will get you what you want. Just make sure you've got the counterweight included in your budget too.

it could be a bad engine mount

you should at least inspect the engine mounts first, they’re known to tear or break across the top rubber part

 

Turns out the clutch material was in pieces and was getting lodged in the pressure plate release....and the motor mounts were bad. ;-)
