I bought the rx8 in 2006 brand new GT, 6 speed,leather,Bose speakers,keyless entree every option but the GPS system. It has right now 33,005 miles on it and 1 owner.
never been in an accident paint has no dents small scratches but is in overall excellent condition. Garage kept and have gotten an oil change at least 2 times a year since I've owned it. I've never had a problem with this car not even a sensor fail.

now I might try to sell it I might not I've looked on KBB a while ago and the value was 4k$. So I figure with how "unreliable " the engines reputation is that's why the value is so low . My question is if I do try and sell it what should the price be?

 

a current comp test would help set the price. all recalls done?

Get on sites like CarMax and AutoTrader and do a nationwide search, that will give you an idea.

 

Yours is low milage and well kept. I would think it's somewhere in the $5-6k region of compression test is as good as I think it will be. If compression is low, likely $3-4k, but like mentioned before you need a current test done.

 

I value an '8 without compression test results the same as an '8 without a motor.

 

Where are you located? Do you premix?

 

Im in Connecticut but I would never sell this car for less than 9k I’ll just keep it and drive it.
i have no problems with it just wanted something newer but compare what other used cars you can get for 4-6 k it’s not even close.

 

Very true, that's the reason we like the car so much. 9k though can almost buy a good R3 for that.

That's a great looking rx8. I think a fair price for that would be around 6 or 7k at the high end. It will be difficult to find a buyer for 9k for a non R3 model.

 

I just sold my R3 with 30,000 miles, fairly quickly for $12.5k. I am sure if I had waited I could have gotten more.I would try listing the car for 8 or 9k and see if you can get any bites. Cargurus, was really helpful for me. I don't think it is unreasonable to ask for a compression test of a higher millage engine, but at your millage it really is not necessary. I found the same people who were asking for compression test on my R3, were the just tire kickers who wanted other ridiculous things such as a dealer inspection, photos of every dent and scratch, and underside photos (when the car spent its whole life in SC).

Good luck with your sale, I would buy yours over and over priced R3.

 

I just bought an '08 GT 6MT in Stormy Blue Mica from a PA owner with 43K miles on it for $8200. The lady followed up on my Autotrader inquiry after a couple days, and had about six people waiting in line, every one of them ready to commit to buy from their emails. The pictures were exceptional, and her and her husband did a great job of cleaning it up inside and out...a big plus. It was "fish, or cut bait" time... I found out after committing and putting a down payment that she had recently had the plugs, wires, coils, and battery replaced, plus a compression test done...win!

My month-long search ended well, but it was different compared to what others are suggesting here. I looked specifically for an R3, but couldn't find one with less than 80K+ miles, and ALWAYS priced at the upper end of the pricing spectrum, from $12K and up. I did find two under 20K miles, but both were in the $20 to $25K Since I was looking particularly for low mileage models (under 50K), I kept looking. I considered all years and all colors, but favored the latest model GT's & 6 speeds I could find with the lowest miles for the best price. I <just> missed out on a 30K mile example up north for $8500, also in Stormy Blue and great condition, before finding the one I bought.

So...from somebody who has recently "looked, saw, and bought", I'd say your '06 GT 6MT with aftermarket wheels with 30K miles in pristine condition would have been worth upper $7K to $9K for me...and I suspect several others would be interested in it as well. A lack of compression test is relevant, but that few miles <should> stand you in good stead otherwise. I think the '04's & '05's were the years most of those engine problems happened in.

 

Gorgeous 8 but I couldnt shell out that much for an S1 regardless of the year or how good compression and milage is. $6k for a good one max or you overpaid. Parts are $$ for this car and it's getting older so things wear out.

 

Yeah, I looked nationwide during my search, and there were plenty to be had at $6K & under, but none in this mileage / color / version / condition. When I asked if she would take less, that's when I found out how many people were waiting in line YMMV

 

My opinion is that a price of a used RX-8 is not relevant in regards to the 'blue book' or KBB et al. To say a car is overpriced compared to the book - or a great deal - in relation to the book, is a false read with an 8. It truly is about the owner(s), the history of the car, the maintenance, the compression and how it was driven. You're buying engine health - not blue book values.

 

There is value, which is how much you think you could get for something or how much YOU value it.

Then there is worth, how much can you get for it right now...if sold within a short time period.

I highly value my car, I bought it with extensive maintenance records and from a knowledgeable previous owner.
But what it’s probably worth would be disappointing at best.
Value is subjective and anecdotal.
Worth is the reality; and as a lover of my car I like value.

Bet you $100 it isnt perfect. Granted it probably is in good shape and I stand by my $6k valuation. That's what a good RX8 is worth.

 

Well an update to my situation I put the car up for sale today for 12k was at a dealership looking at a new car explained the situation of waiting to sell the rx8 before geting something different . The salesman talked to the trade in guy said the blue book value is 2-4K witch I knew and I wouldn't sell it for that. Then after they looked over the car and seen its condition they offered 7k trade in witch I declined.

 

These cars are just dated is all. Series 1 had a lot of problems, granted if you know how to maintain this car most common failures are avoided. The general public does not know this. Most people think it's an unreliable gas guzzler that doesnt make the power or have the size to justify its gas milage. I'm sure your car is a gorgeous example but from what I've seen these cars go for very little on the open market.

 

7K trade in is high - I bet that they'll get you into a new car with a payments scheme to make up the difference between 2-4K and 7K,

 

I agree with this. I suspect the dealership might be offering you a higher-than-NADA trade-in value offset by what they hope to make on their vehicle. You are welcome to sit on the car hoping for a higher price, but as the RX-8 ages out, I question whether they will ever achieve 'collector's car' status. Put your car up for sale and see what you get offered...there will be plenty of lowball offers to start, but weed those out and work with the ones willing to buy a well-kept RX-8.

If you had a true collector's car, the vehicle would stand to 'appreciate', or go up in value over time, but for right now, the RX-8 is <not> one of those cars

 

I bought mine with the intention of keeping it forever, with the renesis In it or not (wouldn’t ever put piston engine in there).

To this day there isn’t a car of comparable value with the handling and power (albeit low torque), and the styling close to the 8. The Gt86 is the closest thing, but it’s slower and I see a Toyota 86 at least 3-4 times a day driving around. If I’m lucky I see another 8 once a month, and this is in population dense area.

I agree with Jake. I have test driven about a dozen cars including 3 vette's, 350Z, mustang's, miata, BRZ, genesis coupe and others. None of which satisfies and handles like the 8. In spite of its issues, I've decided to keep it.
