Sold my son a stuffed motor
Hi all,
My 20 yr son bought a 2005 RX8 for $2500 for the looks with limited knowledge, the seller knew the motor was rotten & counted on a 20 yr guy buying it for its looks. Replacing the engine appears to be out of my son's budget, any ideas on how to proceed to sell it as a parts car? All and any suggestions or buyer of a good looking car with a very shaky engine. I am trying to help my son with his first car purchase that went horribly wrong for him.
Thanks

Ouch. Quickest way to dump it is to list on kijiji but fair warning, I bought my non-running 05 for $1000. I'm sure Mazda quoted a lot for a reman, but know that they can be had for cheaper elsewhere. Depending on where in BC you are, you might be able to find a reputable rotary shop. I've seen rebuilds being offered from $3300 if you're willing to r&r the engine yourself. Of course, you also need to factor in a new clutch, ignition coils, wires, plugs, etc.

Hi,
Thanks for the thoughts, where can I find a list of reputable engine rebuilders in the lower mainland area or farther if that is the case.
I will discuss what he can do when he gets home from work.

I'd keep it and get the engine rebuilt. I don't know about Canada, but in the US, rebuilds typically run between $1600 and $3000 (depending on how much damage there is).
Make it a father/son project to remove and reinstall the engine but definitely have it rebuilt by a reputable rebuilder.
Your son is getting an expensive lesson in caveat emptor but that doesn't mean that it isn't necessarily a bad car.

First how do we know it is "stuffed" Have you had a compression test verify that?
Does it not start?
How many KM's are on it?
I would say get a compression test done on it before doing anything else.
If compression is good then get all new ignition components plugs/wire/coils and check to see if teh catalytic converter is plugged.
You never know, some people have lucked out and bought a car that the owner thought was bust, but had just been flooded.
