High output alternator?

Hi there,

I wanted to invest in a new audio system for my 2005 a/t rx8. I recently installed some interior 6000k LEDs, and noticed that when I start my engine they flicker slightly.

Would it be worth investing in a higher output alternator(220amps) such as the Iraggi Alternator? Or is there some sort of limiter?

Also, are there any batteries that people have upgraded to use for higher output audio systems? I'm not going to run anything crazy, I just want to make sure my lights aren't flickering/battery wont be drained.

Thanks in advance!

The 130A Alternator from Advance should fit your needs pretty well ... together with an 80Ahto 90Ah Battery and a Capacitor your lights should not flicker.

I want to make sure I'm well informed on this... What exactly will bottleneck/throttle the amount of juice my alternator puts out? If I buy a 200 amp alternator, will my car be able to use that maximum output?

Why not remove the LEDs and use the extra amperage for your sound system? All you have to replace is your battery.

Search here and you will find other options that other competition audio guys have used.

First thing you should update is the big 3, 0AWG if possible, unless you are running something massive, the oem alternator should be fine. Also, make sure your battery is in good condition, grounding is very important, if you use the chassis, it may work for lower end systems, but very high power systems, run a ground line in the opposite side where you ran the power. A cap may help, but will not help with the power, just when the lows kick in, helping minimize the dimming.

Wait, are you saying that the justification for a bigger alternator is the fact that your lights flicker when you start your engine?

Well, yah, the alternator probably isn't doing anything at 250 RPM. Lights dimming/flickering while cranking the engine is normal.
