My 2007 Rx8 is riding on OHTSU FP7000 225/45 r 18's, they still have plenty of tread but i have noticed within the last 1000 miles of riding that i am getting a tremendous amount of hydroplaning during rain. I have put less than 4000 miles on these tires since i got the car and i had no problem in the rain when i first began driving the car. The recommended amount of psi for the car is 32 and that is what i have in the tires, is that rule still the same if the tires are low profile? Do i need less psi? Any helpful advice is appreciated. Thank you!

p.s. This is my first experience with this brand of tire, so it may be that they are just poor tires as far as handling goes. Any advice on the tire brand is appreciated as well.

The answer is "it depends". First, stick with known quality brands. Second, review the reviews for any tire you are considering. TireRack.com is a good source for reviews as well as tires. Third, what you get will depend on what your goals are. It's an "unattainable triumvirate" of grip - life - cost. Pick two. Then pick two from dry grip - wet grip - cost. I'm sure there are more triumvirates...

My strictly personal opinion is that if you have to have all-seasons, can't do better than Continental ExtremeContact DWS. Totally predictable in all weather, does great in the wet and pretty-good in the snow.

If you can go with Summer-only maximum performance, shorter-life tires, Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Specs or BFG Rivals will both do you good.

Anything with less grip or longer life, there are many good tires out there. Just do your homework to make sure they don't suck.

 

225/45R18 is the OEM size for 18x8 wheels. What does the sticker on the driver's door say for your pressures? Start with that.

Though, honestly, I doubt that pressure is going to have very much impact on hydroplaning resistance if you're in the reasonable range around 32 psi.
