I did a search here but I didn't see anything for this code. My girl threw a P1072 code, system too rich. Any ideas of what might be causing this? I am thinking O2 sensor or MAF but wondering what else I should look for.

I can clean the MAF but not sure how to determine if an O2 sensor went bad. If it's a good idea to look outside of those, what might be a good place to start?

Are you sure on that Code? I don't see it in the RX-8 FSM.

 

Yup, it's on the CEL list posted here. Plus the symptoms are consistent with other ODB codes for other cars.

I had my front O2 sensor go on me.
The AFR's would flat line for no reason.

 

OHHHH, P0172 not P1072.

 

Yeah I am thinking it might be the O2 sensor... It would make sense making the car think there isn't enough of an air mixture and cutting the gas in order to compensate. I just don't know how to confirm the sensor went bad. Ideas?

I'll clean MAF anyways but is there something else out there that would make the car think she is running super rich?

Cool, thanks for the link. Not sure what all of that means but it's something I could give to my mechanic if I can't figure it out.

I mean with the age, it is more than likely the O2 but the fule pump could be on the way out too. But diagnosis by parts replace can get expensive so it is best to properly diagnose.

That said, I have slowly replaced almost all of the sensors and many components on my engine just to rule out possible issues in the future since she is almost 12 years old.

 

Yeah my girl is an '04 with 120K on her (new engine at 95K). She still looks pretty because I like keeping her like that. There has to be an easy way of diagnosing the sensor before just replacing it, seeing if it fixes the problem and if it doesn't moving on to the fuel pump...

Easy way to dig the fuel pump? Maybe the hanger went? Hopefully not whole thing?

Either way, a sensor or pump is WAY cheaper than a new engine... Which of course is what went though my head when she sputtered.

 

Yeah the O2 and pump are likely original, they don't replace anything sensor wise when installing a reman. You can test both. But you need the right tools. But IMO, both should be replaced at this point.

 

Awesome sauce... In reading MM's account of Fuel Pumps, it really sounds like that's my problem. You don't have a link to a DIY or the tool I would need for that would you?

You can get the tool from BHR for $50.00 or most autoparts stores will rent one that will work. And if you replace the pump, you want to replace the whole assembly, not just the pump alone. O2 sensors slowly degrade over time and don't work like they should so installing a new one is just a good idea on a high mileage car all around since the primary O2 is such an important sensor.

 

Full assembly, makes sense. I gotta go parts shopping I guess. I think there is a cat in town who might have the tool. I'll see if I can borrow his.

Help me out again dude. I swapped out the fuel pump but she's still throwing the same code so it's got to be the sensor. My questions though, what's the difference between the FRONT and UPSTREAM sensor and which should I swap out to fix this code?

 

The front is the upstream. The front is a wideband O2 sensor and the rear is not. How is she running? Have you checked fuel pressure? It could be related to the fuel pump resistor in the engine bay.

 

But in searching for sensor to buy, by the same manufacturer, there is an option to buy the "upstream" and "front", which is confusing the hell out of me. I swapped out the fuel pump to the Airtex and she ran fine for about 5 min and then she started cutting gas, which makes me think it's the sensor.

When I first turned on the car, she didn't have a CEL and after trying to drive her, the CEL came on. That's got to be the sensor thinking the mix is too rich right?

BTW, these are the sensors I am looking at. If you notice with the Walker, there's the "front" and "upstream", both at different prices. I'm thinking it's the front because it regulates AFR's but still a little confused.

Thanks for the heads up on the discount. Sorry to be a pain in the *** but I am still confused on the difference between the AFR (front) sensor and the UPSTREAM sensor. Which is it that I need to replace? Advanced lists both AFR and UPSTREAM separately and at different prices as well.
