I've heard that the RX-8 has a Mindisc player on board, besides the regular cassette and CD players. Does anyone know if this is true? I'm hoping so, as I use Mindiscs more often than cassettes and CDs.

 

I think this will depend on the market. It appears that apart from the fascia, the RX-8 stereo is almost identical to that used in the Miata, Mazda6, and who knows what else these days. Makes a lot of sense for Mazda to standardize.

Anyway, the point is that these units are modular - there is a lower panel that can be replaced by a cassette or MD player (and possibly even other options in the Japanese domestic market).

I don't believe that the MD has been offered as an option in any of those models here in the US, but since it's truly modular, you could likely obtain one from overseas and just plug it straight in.

 

What options are those?

 

Knowing the Japanese penchant for gadgetry, there'll probably be a PS2 module.

Personally, I'd love to see an MP3 module.

 

Maybe, and hopefully, a sat. radio module so we can get Sirius radio as an option.

 

As everyone says the system is modular.

For the front you choose casette (yeah right) or MD.
At the back you have single CD, 6 CD changer, or MP3 player.

No details on any of it. It's a dealer option so they'll call me just before they get the car and then order the correct (MP3+CD) unit to put in the car.

Sat radio is unlikely from here as nobody has ever heard of it! I can guess the idea though!
