Hi guys my name is Liz, I've had my 2006 run for a year and a half. Love the car- Sunday my car started running horrible. Long story short it was a misfire on number 2. I took my car to a mechanic - not mazda i hate the dealerships- and had the plugs and wires and coils changed. Well I went to pick it up and was told the light is on and saying misfire one number 1. But runs fine. It does run fine but the light flashes when I give it gas. But only when I punch on it to give it gas. They said maybe it will reset itself. Either way I'm taking it back tomorrow. Any ideas guys? Please help.

Good on staying away from dealerships. We have seen quotes of $1,500-$1,800 to replace $200 worth of ignition parts that can be done with hand tools in an hour if you don't know what you are doing

 

I'm sorry guys - I'm new and failed to read like an idiot. I just read the common reasons for misfires. Sorry for starting a new thread. I'm just hoping it's not low compression. Do I have to take the car to Mazda to get the compression checked accurately? ? I hate the dealership they rape you! Ugh.

 

But I will add that the light only flashes when I stomp on it and give it has to shift or pass or whatever. It doesn't constantly flash

 

Probably, unless there is a rotary specialty shop in your area.

 

You can take the car to a parts store where many will check your codes for free.
You may also want to get your catalytic converter checked. Ask the shop you're dealing with to inspect it for you.

 

Yes, BigCajun is right. Not many shops have rotary compression testers other than dealers.

The compression test price should be in the range of $90 to $250, with prices usually being around $120 to $180. It's predictable enough that you can expect to be in that range.

Since you have a 2006, do you know when your engine warranty expires? it's 8yr 100k, but from date of first sale. You could already have it up if it was sold early 2006, or it might have life left on it, possibly a year or more if it was sold really late (like mine was). If you DO have warranty left on it, and the engine DOES fail, then unless the dealership gives you trouble, the compression test, and engine replacement, is pretty much free. Sometimes you will have to pay up to a few hundred bucks for other stuff, but far cheaper than an engine.

Compression is one of the last reasons though, plenty of other stuff to solve for.

 

Have you did the 20 brake peddle stomp to clear your memory? If not it will store the misfire and randomly pop it up I had a similar problem my self with it recalling a non existing misfire.

 

No I haven't tried that yet- I've read about it and I will try it tomorrow. The cat is new- and I have 99,000 miles on it. I'm in Louisiana so I don't really know where c to take the car

 

When it popped back up was it the same as the original misfire? Originally it was on number 2 now after I had everything replaced the code says on number 1. But the cars runs perfect.
