Hi all, so today I picked up a universal open element air filter for my Rx. But after I took the stock box out I realised the MAF sensor will be a problem as it needs to be in place between the filter and intake. So after much thought I've decided to saw the pipe coming off the stock box and simply put the new open filter on that.. There's another socket which needs to be put in the car aswell the green one but this is fully detachable from the old box so shouldn't be a problem. My question is simply will this work if I saw the pipe with MAF sensor on it and use that?? Please help ppl I really want to fit this!

 

No no no no no.

This will give you all sorts of problems. Our stock intake is VERY good, and the MAF is VERY sensitive to the presence of the screens, it must be far enough from the throttle body, and it must be far enough from the mouth of whatever pipe it is in. You can't shorten our stock intake without causing significant power loss CELs, misfires, stumbling power delivery, mileage loss, etc... There is quite a bit of technology in our intake, and you can't just make changes without proper R+D. In fact, of the brand name intakes out there, only AEM/Mazdaspeed and Racing Beat provide a benefit, and most cause all the same sort of problems. K&N Typhoon and Weapon-R are the worst for us of brand name intakes, with generic universal ones even worse.

Please do not do this.

Hey thanks for your response guys. That's a shame, was looking forward to having a open air filter. I nearly done this yesterday afternoon thank god I didn't lol.. How much is a AEM/Racing Beat or Mazdaspeed intake costing?

 

You're looking at 3-400 for a new intake. Keep an eye on the classified forum here if you're willing to wait on a cheaper used one.

 

Our stock filter is REALLY good, it doesn't cause a restriction. Given any possibly air filter that they could run, the Grand Am 450hp 3-rotor RX-8s ran the same stock paper filter that we have in our RX-8s, meaning that our filter has plenty of flow for 450hp. It is also far better at fitration than most aftermarket filters including K&N. Other race RX-8s were losing engines to sand ingestion at Daytona until they moved back to a stock filter from K&N.

My only complaint with the stock intake is that the air box is a PITA to move out of the way when you need to get behind it.
