Hard starts + Poor idle...

Hi there i tried to post in the Troubleshooting part but was unable to,,
Got a 54 (2004) RX8 231 116k,, It is sometimes difficult to start from cold and other times starts fair quickly, whilst warming up the idle is pretty good,

One the car is at running tempeture the idle drops a little and sometimes will stall, once stalled or turned off it will not restart again for a good 20 minutes,

I believe it had new Coil Packs, Leads and Plugs around 5000 ago however they were put in November 2011...

I tried a regular compression tester was getting 91PSI on front Rotor and 81PSI on rear Rotor but not sure if i was doing the procedure correct,, Had all Leads of and 1 spark plug out (one i was testing) which was the trailing plug??

Thanks in advance... Will

A regular compression tester won't work on these, you need the special rotary tester. & what's the condition of your fuel pump?

I havnt checked the fuel pump, i used a regular tester and watched the needle bounce, this method i am told does work (or at least give an indication)..

do the pumps give trouble then?

Thanks

It could be many things, any ides what your cranking RPM's are? Probably not but I would look at the starter before assuming the engine is low on compression.

here is the factory service manual, look at the troubleshooting section under engine for hard starts/long cranking.

There are many threads on this subject, don't start useless new ones please.

This is probably widely known but just in case it's not ....

Good way to find your cranking rpms without a rev counter on your crank is to video your engine turning over with one plug removed. Playback the video - watch the timer and count the pulses . Usually takes several playbacks to get it .

Also - a regular compression tester can be used on a rotary if you remove the check valve . Again - video the guage while testing to see the different readings of the 3 faces.

Any bristol compression testers

Hi Guys,

Is there anyone in bristol doing compression tests? I am more than reluctant to pay mazda £72 just to tell me if i need one or not. Ludicrous.

Regards

Stu
