auto transmission problems

im about to buy this 04 rx8 with 101xxx and has transmission problems for cheap. the engine is great but the transmission is having problems.

the car moves forward and back a little sluggish like if it was slipping and when you put it in N-neutral it moves forward like if it was in drive.
could this be a computer problem or electrical?

for the price im not. even if it needs a new transmission i can replace it myself this is not the first car ive ever worked on or will. i just want to see if this has ever happened to anyone, might be a electrical problem since it stays in d in n. maybe needs the tcu reflashed or something.
