once it was in there snug I tapped on the flywheel with a deadblow in a circular pattern. after about 2 passes it broke free.
You mark the rear stationary gear a bit but its a cast steel piece and sees no metal to metal contact on that side. ie it doesn't matter if it sees some small surface damage.
Thanks for the advice, but it's a situation where we can't afford to get stuck. Having the tool would be more reassuring. I haven't ever had to pull one before and am a bit hesitant to chance it.
The counterweight tool pushes three bolts into the same surface (Rear stationary gear) and does the same amount of damage it not more.
I'm not doubting you, just my own n00biness from never having done it myself before. Others are telling me the same thing so I'll give it a try. I don't really understand why there's a separate tool for it if you can just leave it bolted to the FW and pull them off together at the same time
because as it heats up it gets stuck to the flywheel, or is just rusted on and human strength will not get it separated from the flywheel but a little blunt force from a hammer is enough. Ive also done it this way everytime and never used a tool, BUT ive also got stuck at this stage and had to use more than necessary force on one that was rusted on. I got it eventually but the counterweight was scored up bad.
A tool will always work i guess, but the other method has always worked for me..
