It has been a long time since I posted I just wanted to stop by and say Hi. My RX-8 is running like a top so there has been no real need to check the forums until now.

It is time for brakes, tires, and shock for my old girl. She is a 2004 model at 96,000 miles on the original motor with perfect compression.

Since I going to school as mechanic I will be doing all the work myself. Got any good leads on deals for the tires, shocks, and pads?

Depends on what good means to you. On the street for driving to and from work they would probably be great. If you want performace through the corners they will probably be less than good.

 

Overpriced and not all that great. Especially this year.

 

I'm suggesting taking a look at what you do with your 8 before you buy tires.

Little story... Before I had my 8 I had an Integra GS-R (miss that car sometimes...) and I bought Falken Azenis RT-615's. EPIC tires for autocross and aggressive street driving but with a 140 treadwear rating, paying for new sets after 9k miles got old.. quick. For a primarily street driven car I just don't think its worth it anymore.

Keep that in mind before you look into TANKERG's suggesting which is on the same level as the Falken's I bought. Your suggestion of those Michelin's would be great if you're looking for something quiet and long lasting but don't expect to hit up some back roads and enjoy them...

There are tires in between something like the Yokohama Advan Neova AD08 suggested above and the All Seasons you posted.

I've been through quite a few tires on the cars I've owned and currently i'm on a set of Hankook Ventus V12 EVO's and I can say I won't be getting a second set.

 

Compared to what?

 

The new Dunlop ZII and BFGoodrich Rival especially.

And the Hankook RS3 and Dunlop Star Spec ZI were both proven to be faster, and cost less...

Not saying they are not very grippy tires, they are, i've driven on them on multiple cars.

Just that the fastest guys in the country are either on Hankooks, Dunlops, or Toyo's.

 

For autox? How do the Star Specs hold up on the track? I heard they didn't hold up well under the heat.

The SSs are definately cheaper!

 

The Hankook RS3 is better for track duty as it likes heat and takes more heat to really work well.

 

You think the RS3 handles better than the AD08 on the track? I've never tried that tire.

 

I just got some hawk hp + brake pads and new slotted rotors... These pads bite hard!

 

It will produce faster lap times, for the most part.

Sometimes the tire can be car dependent.

But for the track or autocross check out the new BFG Rival. Has more grip than any street tire on the market right now.

 

I just read some stuff on the new BFG Rival. It will be nice once they're fully available for more reviews but so far they look pretty great. I was on the fence between RS3's or the new Zii but now I'm leaning towards these BFG.s.

 

I have to take issue with you on this statement. How can you say these are better tires when you have never driven on them? The Z2s have just been released, which you said you returned, and I will assume you didn't drive on them. And I believe the Rivals haven't been released yet.

I'm not saying that these tires will not be better, I'm saying it's a bit premature to say they are better when they have yet to be released or just released and you haven't driven on them.

I have read and believed hype about the Michelin Pilot Super Sports. C&D wrote a great article about how great the tires are and how Ferrari use them for OEM implying that they have to be excelent. I absolutely hated them on the track, and regretted the purchase.

 

I am highly disappointed with the Michelin Pilot Super Sports as well. It has a lack of on-center steering feel, poor turn-in feel, and non-linear through a corner....On they track they were mediocre.

Somehow, the way the RX-8 steering is tuned is suited to high-grip, sharp, and grabby tires - when I installed the super sports, I could best relate to saying it felt more "Camry-like." Floaty feel, no bite upon initial turn in. I thought it was the "mold release" that is usually said to be on tires. But I have at least 15k miles on them now, and the steering feel has never improved. The overall grip is there, but I cannot feel the tires well.

They are also harsh on rough bumps. A major step down in terms of driver-connectedness vs. the tire I replaced, which were bald, worn Advan A13s I got from a used Evo X.
