I want a shift position counter mounted exactly like the one in this video maybe by the water temperature gage. Could anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

My 07 Mazda 6 5 speed automatic had that. Is your car automatic or standard?

 

it's called H pattern, all manual cars have it.
Speed\Rpm and you know what gear you're in.

15000$ for a sequential gearbox, they may need the the gear indicator.

I can probably help you with one of those, or something that will work with the RX8's manual gearbox.
Its a digital display made by a company called Acumen electronics. There website is

They make a lot of stuff for motorbikes. The unit you need to look for is the DG8. Its under the heading gear indicators and shift lights.
I have one of these fitted to my car and it does a pretty good job of letting you know what gear you are in. My car is a six speed.
It does take a little bit of work to get one of these to work with the RX8 though.
This is due to the case that the RX8 doesn't have a direct source for speedo pick up as the RX8 works of wheel speed sensors on each wheel.

If that’s a real question... It’s a 6 speed manual transmission.


Basically I’m a weekend racer in super spec and I’m always looking down at my shifter for reference, maybe it’s just a bad habit I have to break , or just get more seat time, but just having the visual reference would be great.

"Work" is my middle name! I have my tyranny sitting in my living room! checking all the syncro's out making sure everything’s fresh for next season... Noticed a slight bend in my shifter fork may be the cause of a randomly sticky 2nd gear I was experiencing.

 

Money is all relevant to the person; maybe my $1000 tyranny holds the same value to me as his $15,000 dose to him...

 

I think the point of bse50's post is that an H pattern should not require a gear indicator. A sequential gearbox, yes since it is merely an up and down selection. Like how some bikes have gear indicators...

 

Yep.
If you know at what speed\rpm you're at you also know the gear as well. If you have to look at your shifter you're plainly doing it wrong.

I suppose each to their own whether you like it or not.
I have found it useful especially when in gears 4th,5th or 6th.
To make it work though I had to add a small voltage amplifier circuit to the the signal source I used for the speedo reading, which is part of the wheel speed sensors.

Is there a lag time between the count on the indictor and your actual shifts? or is it dead on?

It shows on that little display what gear the vehicle is in.

Like if I was in 1st gear the little display would show a 1, and say I was in 6th gear the little display would show a 6.

 

I think he understands what the function is, but what is the point of having it? You should have a pretty good idea what gear you are in by looking at your speed and rpm like someone else said.

 

The display is basically dead on, no delay, as this is designed for a motorbike which is a sequential shift.
What you have to do is teach the display, by taking it through the gears as quickly as possibly basically.
These a setup to teach the unit.
As I said before, each to their own, I like it, because it makes it easier to see what gear I'm in.
I don't think it is that useful for the first three gears, but comes in very useful in the last three gears.
My car also runs a taller diff ratio, 3.9-1, so I'm not revving as high as most of you in each gear, so this also makes the gear indicator quite useful, as its quite easy to be in 4th or fifth gear on the motorway and not realise you still have one or maybe two gears to go.

Um... Shouldn't you know what gear you're in regardless? As mentioned before, you still have an H shift pattern transmission... If anyone is having trouble and missing gears 3-6 (which shouldn't even be a problem with our transmission), then they should be working on their shifting instead. The only way I see this being of any use while having an H shift pattern is for the indicator to be used on freaking trucks... Yes, trucks with double digit amount of gears...

 

If i can see the speed and rpm i'm at I also know what gear i'm using.

 

I know which gear I'm in because I put it there.... Even on a bike, only a neutral indicator should be needed.

 

Good then that the Acumen DG8 comes with a neutral indicator as well, just incase you forget where neutral is.

I have found myself using a death grip while shifting on the track. Is it possible you're doing the same thing? Try just using fingertips with just your thumb, fore, and middle finger.
