So my dealer called me again today. They told me they are replacing the intake. (which I think they mean solenoids) and also are trying to sell me a new CAT for 2200$

I told them Ill bring my dual resonated midpipe to fix it. He said that the tech told him now the car is running rich because the cat is partially clogged (too much exhaust restriction), but if i put a midpipe, it wont solve the lack of power issue because the will be no restriction on the exhaust. He said the car will still run rich and the problem will remain. The tech told my rep that the engine NEEDS backpressure.

I have read many threads about backpressure and the consensus seems to be that it is not required.

I dunno, I call B.S. If anything, a midpipe and a mazdaspeed exhaust could only improve performance. Isnt freeflowing exhaust gases good for an engine? Less stress, less power required to push the gases out? Or am i missing something.

 

a dealer (in the us not sure about canada) cannot remove a cat legally unless they replace it with a new one. the cat is not needed. mine has been sitting in my garage for years. idk about canada laws but here the cat is under federal warranty for 8yrs/80,000miles

 

my warranty on the cat expired. I purchased an extended warranty which doesnt cover it unfortunately.

 

The dealer probably won't be willing to put the midpipe on, either due to emissions laws or warranty implications. They won't want to ignore the clog either, but they can't force the repair on you. Just swap the pipe at home.

The dealer is wrong about backpressure.

Just tell them you're putting the midpipe on to get you home.
You have a new convertor on order with a US dealer for half of the price they want to charge you, and you'll go pick it up with your other car.

That should bring an end to their story.

yes list price on the converter in the US is $1346. its only 9 bolts and one hanger to change it.
