So I just moved to Portland and I need to find a good mechanic that isnt going to break the bank. I currently need the front brakes and rotars, de-carbonize the engine, and change the plugs. I am also looking to start doing aftermarket mods once all the general maintenance is finished. Can anyone please give me some help, thanks!

Also when you shop for parts at a dealer, make sure you call around, You can save $20-$50 between the dealers.

 

I find the dealer tends to be more expensive then finding a mechanic that knows RX-8s, so I would like to avoid the dealer pricing when I can. I was hoping some of the Portland area owners knew a good place here.

 

I'm in Seattle too, and if you don't take dondo's offer, maybe try to find a fellow 8r around where you live to show you how to change brakes and plugs. It's actually pretty easy to do and I am not mechanical at all, and you'll save a good 5-8 hours of labor cost.

Brakes and plugs are both very easy diy. Removing the brake rotors frequently requires an impact driver (basically just a screwdriver you hit with a hammer), so buy one before you get the wheels off. They're $10-15 at an autoparts store.

But, I'm new to working on cars and after a few times (swapping track setup) can do it in 30-45 minutes. The first time is always slow, so expect it to take an afternoon.

 

If you do not want to work on the brakes yourself then AR Auto Service in Lake Oswego for brakes, alignment and corner balancing

Buy some Seafoam at Autozone or Napa and then read the DIY threads here to decarb the engine.

 

A few of us have garage/install days now and then (as needed), over on mazdasnw.com. These have been great for installing brakes, rotors, suspension parts, fluid changes, and other things. If you introduce yourself over there I'm sure a few of us would be glad to lend a hand.

There's nothing currently planned for the Portland/Vancouver area, things have been a little quiet since the ForumFest. It would be good to post something up in the General Meets Portland section to at least gauge interest and see what projects people have to work on.

I imagine there might be some projects people want to finish before the big CorkSport event in 3 weeks? But that's probably getting too close to get people together before hand. If someone offers up garage space that helps get thing going too, I'm not sure how much longer before I can park in mine again...

John's Landing Automotive - Southwest Portland - Portland, OR

Yelp shows very good reviews. He'll give you a straight price. Since the recession all the shops in that area closed down. JLA was the only one that survived. He has a very good reputation for being honest. At the office you'll see letters written by many happy customers. The portland police commissioner is also a customer.

He can do the regular maintenance for you but he won't do mods.
