Secondary air system

I am getting a random P0411 ECL cide, It happens about 10 seconds after start. However it ONLY happens when it is cold and the car has completely cooled down. Now cold does NOT mean below freezing.

My limited understanding of the system is that the secondary air is drivin by the Secondary Air pump. Solinoids control secondary ports to push air through the CAT until it warms up and this helps decrease emissions particularly sulpher dioxide. Is this correct?

My thought is that one of the ports is not opening all the way because one of the solinoids is not operating fully or is simply too weak to open a port which is sticky as a result of the cold.

Does this make sense? I've searched for the code but all the info I can find deals with a modified exhaust system and mine is stock.

thanks for any help

Just wanted to follow up. The problem was the o2 sensor. It was diagnosed by the P0411 and a pending running rich code. The car now idles MUCH better, it use to bounce about 200 RPM when idling. Just wanted to let folks know what the problem was if they trace the posts.

Question Problems with AIR PUMP

Hi, I have looked trough many threads and I have not found the info I have been looking for.

So, here is the situation. I have a 2004 5-Speed MT RX-8 with approx 112,000 km on it. I got a CEL light one morning and drove it to a dealer for diagnose. They gave me a paper and it had a code P410, which indicated to Secondary air pump malfunction and they told me that my air pump is gone. So now I ordered a new air pump and I am going to install it with my friend.

Could anyone tell me, that do I need to do something else than disconnect the battery, wires from the pump + the hose and just unscrew it and replace it with a new pump i got? Also, I've been reading that there have been issues with idle after re connecting the battery. Is this always the case?

I cant seem to find a DIY on this issues, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings From Finland!

yep, it is that simple, just unbolt the pump, and replace with the new.

if you do disconnect the battery, it will probably need to relearn idle, so you may have to let it run with your foot on the gas for 10minutes or so

that info is in the FSM, which is @ Foxed.ca
