Replacing Wheels (Rims) on Rx-8

Sorry for my lack of proper terminology, I do not own an Rx-8, I am making plans for when the MazdaSpeed version comes out. I own a Miata (99 10AE) atm.

My question is, I know the Rx-8 has the special sensors on it's Rims / Wheels to show you when it's low on air or other things (not sure exactly).

Is it possible to replace the rims with another set (say Chrome) and move the sensors over? Or are the sensors built into the stock rims? Is it something that can be installed on a new set of rims?

Thanks for the info.

It depends. Some wheels will fit the sensors some will not. It is hard to say which ones will or will not untill you try them on. It depends on the design of the hole for the valve stem.

Do a search and I think there was a thread concerning which aftermarket wheels will or will not take the TPMS sensors.

The TPMS sensors are not built in to the wheels. They are installed in a cut-in notch to the rim. Some after market wheels are being built with this notch already and some more will probably be built down the road. However, I have read that there is a sleeve that can be used on some after maket wheels that were not built with the sleeve to hold the TPMS monitor so in short, yes, it should be possible to put the same TPMS monitors into aftermarket wheels.

For a much better answer just search this forum for "tire pressure monitors" and "after market wheels" it should give you access to much better answers than I can. Also try calling the Tire Rack. They seem to have been pretty good at setting people up with this TPMS system, and they will tell you about it as part of the sales pitch. Sorry that I can't be more helpful.
