Much more info is needed. You can't expect to get solid advice with what you told us.
My advice would be to keep searching for lower mileage.

Also, re-title your thread. A forum rule is that the title should reflect the content of the thread.

unless it has a new(er) engine in it, keep the audi. otherwise prepare to blow your bank account on a new engine

I would be careful with looking an at 8 with that many miles.
Even if the engine was replaced there are several other items that may need to be replaced, 170,000 miles on a sports car is like 500,000 miles on a civic.

Depends how good of an engine you want.. A year ago Mazmart said they were doing just the engine for $4600 + your core(installation is not included), now who knows it might be a bit more. They also have a quality product to reflect that price though. I think you can get a reman engine from Mazda for 2000 - 2500 + install price but it seems like a gamble if it will last or not.

I know there are other places to get an engine but I just do not know their prices.

I'd hold out for one with lower miles. That's 170k on the whole car, not just the engine, y'know what I mean? You could spend 4gs replacing the engine, then blow up the transmission or something.
How much are they giving you for the Audi? I see RX-8s with under 100k miles for sale in the bay area for less than $10k all the time. Check out this one on RPF1s. 87k miles.

If your not ready to drop some money into it, then don't get an rx8...its that simple.
