TX Airbag dash cracked!!

Hey, I searched for this for about an hour before posting this, but couldn't find it obviously. Anyways, I have an 05 rx8 and I noticed a couple weeks ago that my dash started to crack, right around the airbag part. It's been getting worse, so I finally got off my *** and went to the dealership to see if they knew anything, thing is I don't feel like I should have to pay for them to fix this, because it just started happening out of no where, and I feel that it should be their responsibility to fix this before someone gets hurt. So when I went there they refused to look at it without seeing some cash first, and I asked to talk to the manager and he's supposedly on "vacation" for 3 days.... So I'm just wondering if anyone else is having this issue, and if I am wrong for thinking they should take the responsibility to fix this for free... and if they don't and something was to happen would I be in the right to consider a lawsuit?

the part will cost you over $400 and the dealer/mazda might split the cost with you if you mention you have friends that have had the same thing. they will have to call their DSM to get approval etc

the airbag will still deploy of course. this is just the decorative cover and the "cracks" are the edges where it "breaks" out when deploying. they are hidden usually but repeated heat/cold cycles etc make the cover and the dash shrink at different rates and expose the edges

In my humble opinion... Yes, your expectations are unrealistic. Your car is seven years old, and you are well out of the warranty for a cracked dash. How long do you expect them to warranty everything... Forever?

That being said, they may decide to absorb some or all of the cost. But they certainly aren't obligated to.

you know how an airbag works, right? how would someone be in danger? and what grounds do you have for a lawsuit? unless youre one of those people just looking for an easy money grab. who'll sue someone for looking at you wrong

edit: and my dash is cracked. i just live with it

Why file a lawsuit and hire a lawyer? Just have it fix, its much cheaper than hiring a lawyer.

There are service vendors and do-it-yourself kits that can repair cracked dashes and other padded vinyl interior pieces. I had this done to another car years ago, and the repair was undetectable. Just google "dash crack repair" or "mobile vinyl repair".
