SSV Actuator

Found out my SSV Actuator is what has been making the god awful ticking noise, when I put my hand on the actuator linkage it stops making noise. It still manages to keep the ssv shut at idle but it does make a ton of noise. Called my dealership and they want 210.00 for a new one. Does anyone know if this is covered under the engine warranty? Or where I might find used one that isn't making noise?

Thanks,

John

Couple of vendors on this site might have one.

You can try www.mazmart.com for one.

You can also try to clean it as mentioned. See......... https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...&highlight=ssv for some info.

Took a look at that thread, my SSV valve is not actually stuck or sticking, its just the actuator that makes a ticking noise.
Will cleaning the valve make the actuator stop ticking? Or is there some way to clean the actuator? Jon posts later on in
the thread about lubricating the bushing, or that there could be a hole in the diaphragm, any way to test for a hole other
than the vacuum test?

Thanks for the link.

That was one theory, another is a weakened or bound return spring within the actuator.
This will prevent the valve from fully closing and allow the valve to chatter because there is some play between the valve's hard stop fully closed and the return spring fully extended.
I've never had the opportunity to work on one that chattered, so I can not prove anything.

Apply vacuum to the actuator and hold for about a minute.
If vacuum escapes, then you have a leak.
This thread/video shows how:

Sorry...I had forgotten whether or not that thread linked went into the chattering or not. I was hoping that at least the spring issue was discussed in there in some fashion, but simply couldn't remember.

or pull the vacuum line off, open the valve and place your finger over the port. it should not move slowly out.

I might need an actuator. Can't seem to find one online so I might try to find one off of a LIM from Ebay. Have to verify that is the problem first.

don't go through ebay unless it's a last resort.. I know for a fact MazMart has them in their new parts inventory. Why not look through there first?

If the SSV is ticking I would recommend a compression check, my bet is at least one rotor face is excessively low and the resulting pulsation in the intake manifold is just a symptom of the actual disease

I have low compressions, which would make sense as to why mine is ticking as well

Hello , I have recently been experiencing some start up issues with my Rx8 and My mechanic said he checked the code and it is the Secondary Shutter Valve, Can a Sticky SSV cause the car to take a few tries to start ? , it starts after like 3 tries max , but it is quiet annoying and embarrassing.

Stop! Stop telling everyone that their engine is blown. You are the reason why people think rotarys are unreliable and theres plenty that are for sale for dirt because the motor is blown, and in fact its a failed actuator or excessive amount of carbon build up on the SSV. Theres no reason the low compression would be the cause pulsating anything in the intake manifold.

Please stop being that guy......always the answer to any mechanical issues with a Rotary is the loss of compression...STFU!!!

Asking TeamRX8 to not provide valid, actionable advice because it makes you feel bad is like asking somebody to stop saying the sun will rise in the morning because you want to sleep in.

And to complain about a 6 year old post makes it even less relevant 😎

Team is a pretty knowledgeable guy around here. Sure he could be wrong but acting like the big guy is only gonna embarrass yourself.

Mine has been giving the infamous rattle (marbles in a can?) As soon as I place my finger on the actuator, noise goes away. Today, with the car dead cold, I touched the actuator and it actually moved inwards a few mm. Looks like I'll be ordering that updated SSV.

That's not marbles in a can. It's just a rattle.

P2070 SSV stuck open code....

I have seen some other threads about this. But just wanted some more input. Got that code, AFTER I replaced the solenoids (Ssv, air, vdi) the other day (because I had p0076, and p0661 solenoid valve cct low) that fixed those 2 codes, I had a p302 misfire code aswell... anyways cleared all my codes. Took it for a drive, when I hit 7k rpm (only when I'm accelerating fast) it boggs out for a second, then I get more power from 8-9k. Then I get the code p2070 that my ssv is stuck open... I have located the valve arm, beside the actuator. And I can move it freely, it does not wiggle around, seems to be moving right. Will do vac test and check my switch for continuity soon. But has anyone had this same problem. If so, or if not do you have any other good tips?? Someone told me to check my cat.. witch I shall do. But just wanted some more input if you've delt with this. Thank you!!!

it may have stuck temporarily/long enough to throw a code or it has to be the switch. More than likely the switch. The VDI valve will open mid 7000 rpm if it’s the High power 6 port engine. You might make sure all the vacuum lines between the solenoids to the intake valve actuators are routed correctly. Won’t play well if the wrong solenoid is connected to the wrong actuator.
