I have been shopping around for a while looking for an RX-8 and while I was shopping i noticed that every car i looked at on the lots had a significant amount of rust on the brake rotors. I finally got my 8 about a week ago and it does have some rust on the rotors but not as much as I have seen on some other ones. Since I know I am not the only person to buy a used 8 I want to know what yalls solution to this was.

 

Most brake rotors are made of iron. Just add water and you get (surprise) rust. On the rotor brake surface the pads wear it away quickly, if it's on any other part, like the hub, that simply means the rotor hub wasn't coated with a protective paint finish in those vulnerable areas. Some manufacturers do, some don't...usually but not always more expensive rotors end up looking better over time. It's so visible in the RX-8 on stock wheels because they are so open, letting whatever is there show to the fullest.

Once rust starts it's fairly hard work to eliminate it and paint with a good enough paint to keep it at bay.

 

I thought painting was the only solution but I wanted to make sure before I started thinkinga bout getting any work done.

 

Our 8 has dimpled and slotted rotors. Even though it is garaged rust started to appear. Found that using CLR takes takes the rust away easily. Just make sure you have a towel beneath protecting your wheels (paint or polish).

 

As cited, most all rotors develop some "flash" rust after rain or car wash. The first time you subsequently use your brakes it quickly wears off. Nothing to be concerned about and no need to use any special cleaning product.

Related: If you're concerned about brake dust you can wax (seal) your rims, or better switch to ceramic pads.

 

Every time I see rust on my brake rotors, I immediately know that they are bad and I order new ones. I'm so broke...

 

As long as you order the new ones through BHR.

Mazda did a TSB/recall on a lot of rotors in the past. I would just repaint them with your favorite color/brand of high heat paint.
