Well, one can assume that your cat went first, which then affected your motors internal mechanics thus harming the o2 sensor due to overheating, then to the coils due to inefficient exhausting and burning of fuel. Tranny rod is an interesting one

The first three are quite common to go out if you arent properly maintaining and checking your car. Did you notice the car running like garbage for a couple days? I dont believe that it all of a sudden all just "broke"

edit: Chances are that you bought the car with a damaged cat. Where did you buy it from? Did they have maintainable records? There is a good chance that you bought the car and didn't know any better and didn't understand the bogged down performance since you didn't have a "good" rx8 to test against.

Most likely a coil(s) went first which dumped a bunch of unburned fuel into the cat and took it out. The high temps in the cat took out the o2 sensor. You're more likely to have cat issues caused by the coils not the other way around.

FWIW, I always changed my coils every 30k miles before I got the BHR Ignition Kit to replace them. I would recommend replacing your plugs and wires too to be safe.

My 3 coils went caput at 16k miles, the cat died at 26k miles. Consider yourself lucky.

I bought it in ohio. When I bought it, I thought it was kinda slow for being an rx8, but I didn't really know what a normal one drove like. The oil was changed b4 I bought it, and I got it changed about 1000 miles after that. And the mazda mechanics did say the coils did cause gas to dump into the cadilitic converter.... That's insaine that yours went bad so early! Its bull crap, cuz this car is supposed to last forever.

75% of the things that broke are due to bad maintenance. It started with neglected coils as op stated. I have ls2 coils and I'm still on my original cat @ 68k.

Um....i only had the car for 2 months. i think changing the oil twice, replacing the spark plugs is about all i could have done in that amount of time, and i did just that. The mazda rep that looked at it said that someone had to know that this was going to happen before they sold it to me. And now im stuck paying over $1000 in repairs on a car that i only had for 2 months... What shoud i do now?

The cat is covered under warranty for 80k miles if you live in the US so don't pay for a new one. I still don't understand what's wrong with the tranny rod. With 47k miles you probably need new coils, plugs, and wires anyways.

get yourself the BHR ignition kit like home boy suggested and either a high flow cat or a midpipe. If you don't want to replace the stock cat pipe though, keep it and let the warranty take care of replacing it....if you have a warranty that is.
