searching for a turbo kit i cam across this..

 

Is it me, or does that ebay ad say 485 hp? lmao

 

It says 485+ hp with 25 psi boost, then it says if you stay around 8psi you will get 50-100 more hp. I didnt think people generally ran high boost on their rx8s on this site so 8-9 psi sounds more like it. Dont know much about turbos though.

Not that I think this kit would be worth a damn lol.

He is also selling headers for trucks/cars for $80, quality stuff I am sure.

lol yes it would be very worth it, if it was good. but it dosnt seem to have a stand alone fule management computer that other 4000 kits come with.

Which is why I said it was junk. no part of my post was saying good things about it.

Even if someone installed it and it somehow worked and did what they said, I wouldn't buy a turbo kit for $400. Thats just asking for it to fail very quickly, like right out of the box before its even installed.

 

Is it just me or is it missing a turbo manifold?

basically if a turbo kit isnt made by the following companies = BHR, Greddy, BDC, esmeril, or BDC stay away from it. I may be forgetting a few but those are the main setups. and you wont get away with less than 4k these days

 

i'm sure that a $400 turbo kit comes with quality components. The turbo especially.

if you want serious power, buy two kits, and link them in series. That way you get a turbo for your turbo while you turbo your car.

 

It's not too bad. You still need a manifodl but there are useable parts. I'd throw something like this on a turbo Civic build. But you can use adapted OEM exhaust manifolds for really cheap for those cars.

The intercooler core will work. The piping will have to be cut up to fit. The clamps are worm gear clamps but you don't need T bolts at 8 or 10psi. The gaskets are low quality and the couplers probably are too. The downpipe might last for a while. It will have to be adapted to fit. The boost controller and intake filter will work fine if you can get the MAF situated properly. Ebay turbos themselves are hit and miss but they tend to hold together longer than you would expect, expecially since you wouldn't be winding this thing up to 20+ psi.

 

Why does someone ask this same question every couple weeks. Buy this instead.

Maybe some intercooler piping and heat wrap. I wouldn't trust anything else. The key word is maybe.............I changed my mind absolutely not. Its trash.

 

I would still love to see someone try it. Don't be scared.

This is more or less a generic "turbo kit," there doesn't seem to be much that's particularly RX-8 centric. The parts are likely lower grade, but in all honestly there's a lot included for $400. View it as a cheap source of a number of the parts for a lower budget DIY turbo project. There are people out there who've done DIY turbo projects using less than optimal parts and have succeeded (albeit, I do not think there are many RX-8s on this forum with such setups). Given the amount of time, effort and knowledge required to make one of these projects succeed, and going rate for RX-8s, I imagine most people would prefer some higher cost part selections, but you do get a lot for $400... If you've never done a project like this, do some serious reading into how often people succeed with high quality results and make the decision for yourself. I'd consider ECU/tuning a bigger issue than the missing exhaust manifold, etc.

will it last ? nope. absolutely not.

it has nothing to do with "give it enough time ..." , garbage is garbage. You simply can't change that fact.

 

I think that it is interesting that this "kit" contains a manual boost controller but no wastegate.

 

you don't need a waste gate when the turbo is going to fail within the first 2 minutes.

 

Without one, the motor is going to fail in the first two seconds!
