Ok so idk where to put this because I don't even know what's wrong... First off I have a 2004 A/T rx8 with 48k miles on it. The issue I've noticed lately is that the engine will sort of jump (kind of like a constant cough) when I keep the RPMs constant at certain times. It will make my rpm's jump down, for example from 2000 to 1.5 and will choke... Idk what it is but it's the weirdest thing and I'm not sure how to describe it. Plz help, lol

 

Does this happen while driving or just revving?

 

If it's what I think it is......it might be the obligatory future engine change, but hard to say with what little info you provide. Sounds like what happened to me for the longest time.

 

You should let the garage to check it!

 

It happens while im driving. Its while I'm accelerating constant and have my RPMs constant but only at a certain speed. When it happens the car kind of chokes and you can tell somethings wrong

 

does it ever stall at traffic lights or when stopped and difficult to restart?

 

No it starts fine and never stalls

 

When was the last time the plugs, coils and wires were changed?
Have you cleaned the MAF recently?

If you've never changed the plugs, coils and wires, or have no record of someone else doing it, start there. Get some MAF cleaner and clean it as well. Check the how to section for detail on each if you've never done it, or i sound like i'm speaking a foreign language.

If those aren't things aren't the culprit, check for vacuum leaks.

Or, take it to a trusted dealership and have them take a look. It may be time for a compression test.

 

I've never changed them since I've owned the car, and the major owner lives in Texas so idk who it was. I'll check that then, then maybe get the compression test done at the dealer I got it from :-/ thanks a bunch

 

How many miles did it have when you got it?

 

Do you have any good experience with a certain coil or spark plug in particular?? I didnt know if one company has a good reputation on this forum of if u recommended anything.

 

I got it with 44.4k miles and now it has 48.5k

If you have the means, upgrade to the BHR ignition. It will save you money over the long run.

If not, Stock plugs are the best. You can also get stock coils from a number of vendors on here. Some people are running coils from Autozone with success as well.

 

I have stock plugs and coils, but I went with Racing Beat Wires. Seemed good quality.

I got all OEM plugs,coils,wires for less then $300.....search around.

 

im thinking of upgrading to BHR ignition coils with the OEM spark plugs and whatever wires they give me... It costs around 550 for the package but I heard it improves the mpg of the car by a lot and also makes the engine run nicer. Ill probably DIY but ive never touched a cars engine before :-/ I heard it wasnt a hard install, is that correct?

 

No they are not a big deal to put in....just look at the DIY's first to make sure you have the correct tools.

 

Ok so I got back from college a few days ago and go to start my car and I get nothing... The battery seemed dead, which it probably was because it was the original and 6 years old.. Im thinking either the engine was flooded or I need new spark plugs

 

Sounds like you need a battery added to your other parts.

 

Buy another battery so that the devices get required amount of power, and then I believe everything will be fine

 

ok I got a new battery and still nothing, I recorded the noise the engine made when I tried to start it.. the engine was turning over but not firing... It was just rurrring... my new battery is a lot better than the one it had but Im guessing I flooded the engine when I was trying to start it with the old battery

and a happy birthday :-/ Ok so I'm gonna go about deflooding my engine using the DIY on the forum, I've never touched a cars engine in my life, is there anything specific I should watch out for so I dont make matters worse and screw up my cars engine even more?? I know I need to remove the plugs, clean them, dry them, crank the engine with the fuel pump fuse out several times (with the accelerator held down??), and then hope it starts when I put the dried plugs back in... I'm a little confused with taking the fuse out, and is it so you can hold the gas down without flooding the engine more when cranking it??? Thanks for the help

 

If you hold the pedal all the way down(must be all the way), it cuts off the fuel supply.
If you dick around and don't hold it all the way down, then you will be screwed.

In my experience, it's better to have two people when doing this. One to crank the car in short 5-7 second bursts(then let it rest), and then other to wipe all the gas/oil that weeps out of the spark plug holes until it's really dry in there. We did this about 20 times! And while clearing it out....we did NOT touch the accelorator pedal at all but we did have the fuse out.

Then re-install the plugs and stand at the front of the car with relay in hand and close to the position so you can plug it in fairly quickly.
Have the other person crank it and when it catches, plug in the relay and don't let it stall out!
