2.6-liter twin-rotor unit used in the 228-hp RX-8

I wish we had a 2.6 liter twin rotor...consider the source, I highly doubt they know wtf they're talking about.

"The engine obtains a new name of 16X versus the Renesis making it sound like a new diet and exercise routine to help drive the new American dream to lose weight. However, insiders say that it is rumored to have an electric supercharger that’s “quite a lot bigger” than the 2.6-liter twin-rotor unit used in the 228-hp RX-8. The new 16X will also be more efficient than the Renesis after the engine in the RX8 consumed too much fuel and burned too much oil to meet the most recent EuroV clean air standards."

And all this time I thought we had a 1.3L

Nothing new in this artical, just the same old rumers of plans. I am not going to get too excited until I see prototype spy photos of the car on the race track.

If mazda is serious about the rx9 there should be some prototype body designs hitting the car shows atleast a year or 2 before the first rx9 hits the dealership showroom floors. We all know the hold up will be the 16X and getting the power and effeciency high enough for good MPG and emmisions testing. But there is nothing to should stop mazda from getting the chassis and body designed and tested???

Stop, please stop

Stop, people, stop! THIS IS NOT RX8 NEWS. IT'S NOT NEWS. IT'S NOT EVEN TRUE!

I more than wish there was some more rotary news right now and if it were regarding an 'RX-8' it would belong here in 'RX-8 Media News'.

Paul.

Just got back from SEMA show. Yesterday, I spoke with Mazda about 16x. All she would tell me about 16x is that, she doesn't know exactly what car/cars it will be used in, but she does know that they do not want to release a new engine, let alone a new car in the current economic standing.

I would not expect to see any sign of it for at least 2 years IMO

Um, we DO have a 2.6 L twin-rotor engine. That is 100% correct. Mazda claims 1.3 L for tax reasons.

Source? *On the tax reasons, I've never heard of this and I am intrigued.*

There are quite a few world markets where having the ability to claim a sub-2.0 liter motor makes a vast difference in the cost of ownership of a vehicle.

Since our swept volume vs displacement per rev is conducive to this little bit of chicanery, it is beneficial. I'm sure it is not an "official" Mazda stance on the matter.

In Japan, cars are taxed based on displacement. That's why Japanese sports cars tend to have small high-output engines, instead of big engines like with American cars. It's also the reason that Mazda chooses to calculate rotary displacement at the low end. It's also the reason for Kei cars.

http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2206.html

"A prefectural automobile tax is paid annually by individuals who own a car, truck or bus. In case of passenger cars, the amount is calculated based on the engine displacement."

I'm sure MM is right that it's not an "official" Mazda stance, they aren't going to make an official statement that they are under-calculating engine displacement. They just do what's right for them and their customers. Rotary displacement is a gray area with apples-and-oranges comparison to piston engines, so they can't really be said to be wrong about it.

So, it lost horsepower again? Now it has 228? That's the funny thing about rx8 development, every 2 years Mazda introduces performance upgrades that slightly reduce horsepower. 247, 238, 232, and now 228 apparently.

As far as 2.6 displacement, both methods for calculating displacement are correct according to the "rotarygod" user's post.

No upgrades, they're just getting closer to the truth

Doesn't really matter though, advertised HP numbers have always been marketing BS. The 8 is still quicker than the numbers lead most people to believe, once it's out of 1st gear anyway. I've really grown fond of it's linear acceleration and how you have to really thrash it to get power. It's not a car you buy for muscle bragging rights, anyway.

.
it's a difference of location for this one. US is 232 UK/Europe is 228 because of different methods of measurement

Of course if the worthless paper "money" printing continues we will be seeing $4 gas again in no time as well as skyrocketing food prices. That is going to crush any chance of recovery anytime soon so Mazda can get this thing rolling. You would think Mazda has some sort of concept ready to go if they are simply waiting for a better economy to launch the thing. My only fear is that there will not be a better economy anytime soon and its starting to look more and more like that.

Cool, so Mazda is really a girl . What does she look like?

BTW let's hope she's fooling with ya and they really have a car in the wings somewhere...ah...I mean to read the press releases, nearly every other car manufacturer on the planet is investing heavily/showing off prototypes/concepts of their next gen sports/hybrid/electric/city/luxury cars soon to be released from now thru 2015. She (Mazda) would be out in the cold, so to speak, if she waits for boom times (times they aren't so bad actually right now lol) before she decide what-the-heck she is going to do (sounds really dumb to do it that way), but then I've never figured out women anyway - could be time to look for a new gf.

Not only was the Mazda booth worse than useless at SEAM, the folks working the booth were, collectively, about as informed as a bag of hammers.

They were, by comparison to the girls in the other OE booths, rather mediocre.
