i just had to replace my hawk hps pads. and the rotors. because the rear pads were completely gone. i mean like.. down to the backs and scraping on the rotors.

i always would check the front pads since i assumed they would wear down faster and since they had 50% pad i was like..

then i pulled a rear tire and found out i had zero pad left. well **** guys.

so i ordered some hawk ceramics (tired of the dust, thanks tirerack.)

so..

what could cause my rears to wear down a full 2x faster than my fronts? i should note that i do not make a habit of driving and racing backwards. i just replaced my pads and rotors and i do not want this issue again.

 

Are The claibers held in place withthe same type of pins as the front? If so you have to make sure that all the crud is cleaned off them casuing them to bind a little and causing more wear. I had the same troble with my wifes pontiac (its gone now) and it would wear the pads down to nothing in less than 6months.

Those too, but the slide pins too. The slide pins need to be disassembled, cleaned, and new lube applied. You should also make sure the handbrake system is releasing properly as well as adjusted properly.

this would have never occurred to me since the rx8 is the only car i've had with a hydraulic hand brake.

 

How would one adjust the handbrake? I have a slight rear pad dragging problem also. I dont roll on hills as much as I used to before i swappe din new ET500 pads.

 

Yeah, I replaced mine yesterday and I feel like I have to pull the handbrake further than prior to changing the pads. I drove the car for 120 miles and I noticed the burnt smell from the rear brake pads but nothing from the front pads.

 

Well the travel is less for me (after the new pads), so my situation is different. The only dragging issue i notice is the lack of roll on minor slopes.

 

then you've never had any car with a hydraulic handbrake because the RX-8 handbrake is a mechanical cable system.

 

So where would the adjustment be made

 

i meant that the cable goes to the caliper and it compresses the liquid, instead of having the handbrake as one completely separate unit.

the adjuster for the handbrake is in the center console. pop off the little cover near the front and look down. you'll see a 10mm bolt near the end of the hand brake.

 

If you don't wind the rear caliper piston in properly they can cause the piston to not retract. You need to wind it back all the way.....

Not sure why? Had this happen once...they dragged all the time and were getting hot at the track. I removed the pads...redid the pistons and they worked good after that
