Daughters 8 needs new shock just had the front tires off for brakes and noticed some scalloping on the inside edge. It is an 04' sport/gt with and automatic with 50k miles and 18" wheels
Don't need anything really aggresive she is 17 and still in HS just need a better ride.
She plans on taking it to college and I don't really want to have to do it agian in the near future.

Replace them with a set of stock shocks, used ones if you want to save some money. New ones if you want to spend a bit more
If you decide to get them used ask Mazmart here, never had a problem when purchasing used parts from them, everything is always in like new conditions
The cheap shocks can hardly match the ride quality of the stock ones, maybe some koni yellows could do though!

 

Agreed, im sure you can find a set of used shocks in the for sale section. The problem with going aftermarket is that you will also need to find some good springs to go with it since the stock springs will generally be too bouncy/long.

 

I would get a set of Tein basics, they include the springs matched to the shocks. You can pick up the set under $800.00 bucks, or at least I did a few months ago.

Gives you a slightly lower than stock ride that is not too aggressive and doesn't hit the bumps too hard.

YOU is RIGHT, since she is a young drive she all I need are some decent shocks to get her going and to keep the car in top shape.

I have looked at the Monroe's sensimatic but for a little more i can go withKYB or Bilsteins. Personaly I have used the KONI's alot on our vettes and my OLD datzun "z" car and really like them put i hate to put that kind of money into her car.
Just need to make it dependable.

Koni's are nice and as you mentioned expensive. If you are not willing to shell out the cash for Koni's look into picking up some stock shocks (as others have mentioned). Run a search and you should come up with some for sale.

 

bilstein HDs

 

I'm sold on some kind of gas shock for the RX8, Bilstein or even KYB, but can anyone really give love for the factory shocks. My rears don't work and neither did my front new ones on my RX3. Ok, in 30 years, they should work, right! Not yet! I don't think Bilsteins are expensive, since they work, so that's my choice.

 

Have you checked the alignment? Abnormal tire wear is normally an indication of a bad alignment (or innapropriate tire pressure).

At 50k I'm sure a new set of shocks would help ride quality, but if all you are worried about is the tire wear I'd put the car on rack - you could save yourself a chunk of change.

 

You are right on the alignment did notice some off camber on the inside but i was more concered about the scallped wear on the inside of the tires.

My middle son drive a Eclipse as a DD and with less then 15k miles on new tires we thought that he was having some front bearing shotting craps (147k miles). well afteter replacing both front hubs we decided to rotate tire and when we put the back end up in the air both back tires where shot. They where worn on the inside scallpedBAD and cupped. well then replaced the back shocks found that they where JUNK the ony thing that was working where the springs now after new shocks tires and complete 4wheel alignment it rides NICE and no noise.

I think i will probaly go withthe Bilsteins since I can pick them up for $130@ where as the Monroes $110 but have lifetime warrenty! Since she will be going away to school that is a thought also so can keep it Dependable.

You mean $130 each for Bilsteins? Partsgeek is the cheapest I've found @ about $108. each for rears; fronts a little cheaper.

 

I agree with what was suggested above, KYB or Bilstine.
