I'm actually pretty happy to see this. I'm just wondering what kind of implications it has towards other things people say online...

 

i like it. however theres got to be way more to the story than that. you could just say you were lying, trying to impress a bunch of people over the internet with some mocho BS. There must have been video footage posted or witness or something else that would stand up in court.

I myself have never lied, cheated, broken the speed limit, or committed any crimes of any kind so I don't have to worry about things of this nature.

Never post anything online that you wouldn't be comfortable having published on the front page of a newspaper (well, I guess on the news outlets website these days) and you should be fine.
I never cease to be amazed how detached some people seem to be with how the online world impacts the "real world."
Either way, if the guy is guilty, and he was dumb enough to talk about it, he deserves it. If he made it up and is just an internet superstar, it sets a scary precedent.

Wow, and I thought Canada's street racing laws were poorly enforced. Seems the ante just got upped.

This whole situation seems to be missing something. Oh, I don't know...a witness perhaps?

The way this story reads, the guy posted up some lavish tale about him speeding. Someone contacted the cops and then he was tried and convicted based on an internet post. How can they prove he posted it? How can anyone prove it was anything other than a fabrication?

The implications are the next time you want to brag and embellish about something you did that might have been illegal you best be prepared to go to jail on the basis of that alone. This is a terrible idea on multiple levels.

Now, people have been convicted here in the states by posting video online. In those cases, the police used actual techniques to analyze frame rate to determine the approx speed of passing objects to gauge the speed of the "vehicle" in question. In those situations the camera was either seized by police or there was some clearly identifiable element in the video. Most of the time the car was the give-away.

For example, a local here in Phoenix filmed himself doing 219mph in his gold LP640 Lambo. The FBI was able to identify him by the fact that there were 10 LP640's in the whole country, only one in that color and it was registered in Phoenix. Hard to beat that.

The fact that I could get drunk one night and post up a serious fabricated story about how I wasted an R34 skyline going sideways down the 101 offramp at over 120mph while passing traffic, and then get arrested would scare me.

It should scare you too.

Actually, the concept makes me kinda angry. Not stewing angry, but, you know.

 

100% believe that there is more to the story.

Either that or Canada shifted to Guilty until proven innocent. (I'm not sure which one they were? )

But yeah. It would require:
A) a way of confirming that the user ID used was his (subpoena, he posted his information, etc...)
B) confirming that the story wasn't a fabricated lie to boost e-peen
C) the date, time, and location of the action was documented (I assume the vehicle already was)
...minimum.

I'm not advocating bragging about what you have done illegally, I just don't believe that the bare premise of the story is the whole story.

Here is a more detailed story which I read....

A witness came forward and gave a statement to the police after police officer posted a contact on the forum. That's how the charges are laid. The conviction went through because the guy pleaded guilty to get a lesser sentence.

Um. Wow. He even posts the street name in the first post.

And his actual name in the 4th page.

And he even says there was a witness.

The witness joins the forum specifically to post.

The guy(kid) gets into an accident a few days later and posts video about it

I don't see any request for contact info, but it could have been deleted.

He gave up so much identifying information and evidence points.


He was stupid (both driving behavior and post information), and deserved what he got.

Ontario pretty much has gone down the guilty until proven innocent route with the implementation of the street racing laws (stunting or going 150 over). The officer has the right to take away your license for a week, and impound your car. This is fine for the 150 over... the problem comes in with stunting and what the officer may assume to be street racing. Some members of this forum have had their car's impounded when they accelerated from a light at a bit over 50% throttle... cop assumed they were racing with a VW that squeeled it's tires and that was that. Had to fight in court to get it tossed out.. even though they had to serve the initial part of the penalty (the suspension, car lost for a week, and the $400 to get the car back from the impound).
