Not sure if this makes me jump for joy for all of the owners here that keep getting failed for improper ride height, aftermarket headlights, or blink fluid level too low on stock 8s...
...or makes me terrified of NJ drivers even more.
TRENTON — Saturday is the last day that New Jersey will inspect motor vehicles for mechanical problems.
Inspection stations will just check emissions on vehicles five years or older starting Monday.
Motor Vehicle Commission administrator Raymond Martinez says the changes will save the state about $17 million. Most of the savings come from scrapping 2.4 million mechanical inspections and re-inspections performed each year and by shifting new car emissions testing back a year.
School buses, limousines, jitneys, taxis and other commercial-plated vehicles will still be checked for emissions and mechanical defects.
New Jersey will become the 30th state that doesn't look for bald tires, worn brakes, non-working lights and turn signals, and cracked windshields.

While I don't know exactly how it works here, privately owned shops get certification to do vehicle inspections and charge us to perform them. As far as I can tell, it shouldn't be costing the state much, if anything. Maybe I'm missing some subsidized costs though.

edit: Wont this also cut jobs? The texas set up seems to make so much sense. It's mandatory to get inspection. It creates business for shops and jobs at those shops and most likely funds some of the DMV expenditures. It just sounds like NJ is not very good at government.

I know there are morons, especially women drivers, **** I mean I was next to this car at stop light, I see the tires are all bald and I even see some linings showing, obviously brake pad is about to go, the engine making weird noise probably belt is(are) about to break, the car is not old, its a 2002-2003 model. but I mean jesus girl. you don't give a **** about your life thats fine, but I hope that when your car decided to stop functioning and crash somewhere, you will not drag anyone else into your own stupidity
