05 OEM Ipod Adapter

I have an 05 and had the dealer install the OEM I-pod adapter kit. For as much as the kit cost it is really cheezy the way it is installed. Having the cable in the glove box, and having to open the glove box every time to plug in my phone is pretty stupid. I am sure this was probably just thrown in after the car was designed. Anyways I am having a problem and was wondering if anyone can be of any help. I have an iphone, not an ipod, and when it is hooked up it plays back fine, but it does not charge at all. I took it back to the dealer after I noticed this, and they told me it was normal, and that it did not charge. I came across someone selling this same kit on here, and they stated that it did charge, and quoted the mazda web site. So I looked in my manual and it say's that it does charge the unit when plugged in, and the ignition is int he ACC position. So I am wondering if maybe its because I have an iphone, and not an ipod? All my other chargers/accessories work with the phone, even the ones that do not mention the phone, but the ipod. So would like to know if anyone else has a phone they are using, and if it does charge. Sorry for the long post.

It doesn't charge I phone nor I pod touch which were designed after this adapter.

There should be a new cable available to match the new I-phone connector....

I'm not sure why but Apple changed it...

Ok thanks for that info. I'll do a search and see if I can find this cable.

I've been doing some more research...

See this
http://pinouts.ru/PortableDevices/ipod_pinout.shtml

Looks like the iPod models need specific pin voltages and connections to enable charging.

Thanks for that info. That helps a lot. I have an newer cable that got mangled, but the connector is still good. I may see if I can modify something myself. From the sounds of it just a matter of connecting a couple of the pins via a resistor to make it charge. If thats all it is I would think that as Mazda sells new kits for the older cars they would make that adjustment.

According to a friend with an I-Phone, Apple also recently changed the software so it does not charge with anything other than official Apple products. His older cable no longer works other than to generate an error message on the phone.
