Ford reportedly to shut down Mercury

The Mercury brand, rumored to be on the verge of death several times over the past decade, would be shut down under a plan being prepared for Ford Motor Co.'s board of directors, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday.
Citing two executives who have knowledge of the plan but asked not to be identified, the news service said the plan would be submitted to Ford's board in July. How quickly Mercury would be shut down depends how quickly the automaker can convince Lincoln Mercury dealers to close or merge with a Ford-brand dealership, the report said.

I found it kind of sad to see Pontiac go... it seemed like they were improving a lot and had quite a bit of potential...

I can't say the same about mercury.. I'm just left wondering what took so long. At the very least, I'd have felt better if mercury went before pontiac.

Seems to have happened here already - a local dealer who advertises alot on the radio was 'WATERLOO LINCOLN MERCURY' and I heard one of their spots yesterday that refered to them as 'WATERLOO FORD LINCOLN' ........ that just don't have the same ring to it.

Badge engineering at it's finest. If you ain't gonna do anything to create a brand image you might as well ditch the brand.

yeah.... i was working on an 04 sable the other day at work.... and everything just seemed to snap apart with the mere touch

while replacing the master cylinder, the tech broke the cruise control cable. then while replacing the cable the nozzle on top of the coolant lines snapped off and coolant went everywhere..... after that i left lol

I agree. Pontiac had it's own distinct personality. It was different then the other GM divisions. Mercury was just considered an upscale Ford.
GM should have dumped the Buick group rather than Pontiac.

When was the last time Mercury had a car of their own. Perhaps I'm missing the obvious but every Mercury I can think of has always been a rebranded Ford.

I have never seen the point of Mercury. You have Ford and then Lincoln for your high end models. The only thing good Mercury has put out ever is the hot girl in the Mercury commercials.

I hope they keep the aluminum (mercury) trim as an option. With no Mercury Dealers Windsor for the past couple years, whenever the detroit/us mercury rolls by they just look better. Especially the Explorer/Escape/Fusion. It has really been nothing more than a trim option for the past 20yrs, although they did have a little cougar with a similar rear door as the rx8. I think that was their last mercury.
