Is my Dealer full of crap?

A few weeks ago the remote part of my key died. I took it to the dealership where they tried to re-program it but no luck. They told me that i could purchase another one for around 170$, immediately i laughed in there face and said ill try to find one on my own. He then told me if i find another one, bring it in and they'll program it free. 2 weeks later my new switch blade key comes in from Ebay, so i decided to run down there and have them program it (which was about 20min ago). I handed him the keys, and then he told me that there would be a $115.00 charge to program it because its a switch blade key and it has a different programming process.

I know that some of you have programmed your keys on your own, is there really a different process? or is he just getting back at me for not buying their key >.>

they couldn't reprogram the original key? how can that be?

I call BS right there. Did they explain to you why or did they just say, can't do it? I think they are just trying to get your money.

ahh.. Electronic keys do fail.

And yes, they cost alot.

I have seen them want 265 bucks for da key.

Technology is a beautiful thing.

All I have to do is turn my key, Simple mechanicals parts work all da time.

Unlike dos flame kits dat tend to brake.

i thought you're programing just the remote?

to program the key, you need 2 working keys; to program the remote, you just need a working key, and follow those instructions in the link above

It is not possible to program the chip inside the key (used in starting the car) if you only have one key, and yes the dealer charged me $90 to program the chip, the key was like $75 online so i spent about $160 on a second key, however now that i have two keys, i could purchase another key online and program it myself without the $90 dealer charge.

edit: if you are just needing to program the remote (used for unlocking/locking/trunk release) you can do that yourself no matter how many keys you have. however if the chip is not programmed you will not be able to start the car

^ you need two working keys to program anohter key, but for just the remote part you only need 1 working remote, you just do this weird procedure of like opening and closing your door 15 times type stuff for the remote part.

.... here is the remote part programming instructions if you need em

just re-read your original post, and i get it. they're charging you $ 'cuz you got the switchblade. i assume you only have 1 working key. they're charging you to program (and cut) the key in the switchblade, not the remote. had you just bought the remote/fob (not the switchblade), they probably would've done it for free, or you could easily do it yourself. if you already have 2 working keys, just have the new one cut somewhere and you can program the key yourself also. if you indeed only have 1 working key, then you need to suck it up and pay. sucks, i know, i had to do the same. while you're at it, get another key and have it programmed along so you have 3, in case you loose you can just program the key yourself later

and like everyone else said, you don't need an existing working remote to program the remote. if the programming doesn't work, it's 'cuz the remote you got is wrong. there're at least 2 different remotes w/ different fcc id#s or whatever; you need to know what your original one was

you only need two keys to program a remote. You can add more keys or remotes as long as you have 2 keys.

If you cant program the remote you probably got the "wrong" one. The ones on ebay are notorious for being the wrong kind that are basically worthless.

With only one other one correct? i got it to work myself too, but i wouldnt try and start the car with the new key until you get the chip inside programmed, you risk sending the car into lockdown mode lol not kidding either

I'm sure it was sarcasm, but it wouldn't be the best thing to do to the service people...
