Done several searches attempting to find this, and been reading the forums for quite some time now, so please no "GOSEARCH", but anyway to the problem.

Got my 8 about a month or so ago, had plenty of problems but well worth it, this one isn't so much of a problem just as something odd, during hard acceleration around 6-7k RPMS the E-brake light will pop on and not shut off for quite some time, just wondering if anyone else if having this problem. Won't shut off generally until car is shut off and started back up. living in Ohio, so might just be the temp? Any input is greatly appreciated.

 

Check your brake fluid....

Also check your brake pads...if the fluid is low it's likely the pads need replacing as well..unless you have a leak...which is worse

or the switch is loose or has a loose connection- have you had the center console cover off to put in the short shifter or anything like that?

 

No i have not, and yeah, checked the b-fluid, which is low and kinda dark. When it gets non-clear its due for a flush correct? Also haven't had the center console off, but then again bought it used so never know. Imma check into that, its a nice day so might tackle that task today. Also had to to Ricart to get cat replaced ( Wasn't replaced because of coils... blah blah and they recommended new brake pads but for a pretty penny so ) So I'm just gonna go ahead and say its safe to assume that its the brake pads? Also while redlining on the way home from class today ( 3-4 times ) the b-light didn't come on... maybe has to do with a temp thing?

The Ebrake is cable activated. Check that.

Have you been drifting the car? Did you buy it used?

 

Gotcha, and this is my first car I've cared to know anything about... so how would i go about checking that cable? Via center console?
Haven't gone about drifting it, and yeah, bought it used with 51k.

 

E-brake sensor thing could be broken, when you let the E-brake down it touches a sensor to shut it off, not sure if this is the case because ive never heard of one broken but I dont see why not, plus you need to bleed your brakes but this could be it...

 

just and update: Topped off brake fluid and this stopped happening. So good stuff. Still need brakepads and what-not but that will come in time.

 

Sounds like all's well here, but I just wanted to add: That light isn't just for the handbrake.

 

That's the quick, and wrong, solution. Unless there is a failure of the switch or other direct issue, generally a low-fluid state occurs because your brake pads have worn down, and are approaching the point at which you need to replace them. Put in brand new pads, and your fluid will be back to 'full'. You would still need to flush and/or bleed, but now, you will still need pads, and when you put the new pads in, you will likely overflow the brake fluid from the container.




If you have a leak, adding fluid is the right solution, but only if you bother finding the leak.

Thanks Riwwp for the heads up man. Ill def get that taken care of asap. I had a 1997 Olds Ciera before my eight and had to bleed the brakes on that... Pain in the ***. Hope the 8 won't be the same. (Btw, coils arrive later today and i am beyond stoked)

 

So how low was your fluid? I've noticed that my e-brake light comes on a lot in the mornings since it's gotten a bit cooler, mostly when i'm accelerating. I looked at the fluid level and it's right in the middle between min and max where the seam of the reservoir is. It almost never comes on when I put my foot on the brake, do yall think it could be a similar situation to what T RX8 was seeing?

 

Yes, the fluid level sensor doesn't trigger the light at the "min" mark, but somewhat higher than that, so you get it taken care of before it becomes critical.

Likely your pads are just worn down enough to drop the fluid level, and you probably have water in your lines as well, so when the fluid heats up, it expands, brings the fluid in the tank to just above the sensor.

So replace your pads and flush your brake fluid.
