How much for a new engine?
How much for a new engine?
I want to be safe and save up some money for my rx8 with 70k miles but what I found is that its gonna cost like 6 grand for a new engine which im hoping isnt the case. How much money do I need to save up for possible fixes like a new engine possibly? Figured someone here has had that done. I know 3rd party warrantys are frowned upon and I understand why as I got fu**ed on with my last vehicle (the warranty authorized a fix then went bankrupt a month later without reimbursing me any of the money) but at the same time I feel like a warranty would give me some peace of mind. My mazda dealership offers a 3rd party warranty but its like $2000 and if thats what it would cost for a new engine then id rather just put that money away for when and if that day comes.
When my second engine went before the extended 8yr 100k warranty, It cost me around $4700 dollars. The n mazda came out with the warranty and i got all the money back. With 3rd party warranties you are better off just putting your money into a bank account, IMO.
I am fairly certain that all RX-8 engines are under warranty to 100k, regardless of whether or not you're the original owner. After labor and everything, 5 - 6 grand sounds about right. It really depends on where you go to put in the engine...or if you're friends with a mechanic... etc.
My extended warranty was through USAA (fidelity) and it was great. Really saved my *** a lot of money and even though my last motor was covered under the extended warranty it still covered the cost of coils, and plugs (crazy expensive at the dealer). It also covered my coils and plugs one previous time as well as and ABS modulator and labor which was near $2,000.00 or so.

The 8 yr / 100,000 mile warranty comes with the car regardless of how many owners. That is of course providing that the previous owner did nothing to void the warranty.
Is the engine under warranty even though im not the first owner? I asked the service department at the dealership but they didnt know and I wasnt sure how to even find out. This was a big thing I tried to figure out but I wasnt able to get any info on this. The person I bought it off bought it from a dealership where it was traded in so he didnt know anything about the 100k warranty either. If it is under the warranty that would be awesome but I have no clue how to find out...

The following is a list of components covered by this warranty:
Rotary Engine Core
Rotary Housing and Internal Parts
Internal Seals and Gaskets
This is not a recall. This is a warranty extension for the specified parts only. Inspection and replacement of non-failed parts will not be eligible for reimbursement to the dealer or customer. This program extends the warranty period for actual failures due to defects in workmanship or materials in accordance with Mazda Warranty Policy and Procedures.”
Then in October 2008 the attached bulletin was from Mazda North America to all service areas,

This covers all owners of the vehicle until 100,00 miles or 96 months.
The car is pretty much stock other than some cosmetic upgrades, I dont however have any paper work for the services done on the vehicle so will that be an issue?
I looked for usaa and didnt find anything but I have heard of us fidelis and theres mixed reviews about them but if you could let me know that would be greatly appreciated.
That is not an issue as you have no control over the prior owners records. You only have to show that you serviced the vehicle on a regular basis. If you changed your own oil then all you have to do is provide receipts of the oil purchased and filter. It's a good idea to keep a small log book with dates and mileage for the service done to the car. That is sufficient.

Well thank you everyone for the info! Called mazda this morning and had the owner info switched over so everything is set. Going in to get new coils this weekend... The dealership turns out to be cheaper in parts and labor for the coils than a few outside shops...
