QC RX-8 OEM hood material

Hi all,

I am a new member as well as a new owner of a brand new Uranium Gray '09 RX-8 GT Rotary Rocket.

I live in Montreal area so my first stop after I drove off the dealer's lot was off to the rustproofing shop.

When I asked the tech why he wasn't applying rust repellent (grease) inside the hood, he told me it was made of plastic because his magnet screwdriver wouldn't stick to it. I said how about aluminium? He said his magnet would stick to aluminium. I said no, magnets stick only to one thing: Iron (Fe), and alloys that contain it. He did not believe me so I found a piece of Al material (the tracks of the monroof) and he saw his magnet did not stick.

Back to the hood, Alu, plastic, Kryptonite?

Thanks for the feedback,

The RotorCloud

You are correct about the magnet and it is aluminum.

What a moron, but ya, it's aluminum, which means that it wouldn't need it. So While he's stupid, it's okay because iron is the only metal to be concerned about.

He is good and recommended at what he does: dismantling cars and rustproofing them. I bet he does not come across very many aluminium hoods, but he should have known. He did not rustproof the hood, incidentally, only the hinges and the lock. He did however rustproof the freestyle doors who do not require it (alu as well). Oh well, to his defence' the 8 is a rather peculiar cars and he does not see many of them...

He has done a great job on my other vehicle, a Toyota 4Runner which is rust free after three Montreal winters.

Somehow, I suspect not many dealership technicians are rocket scientists as well...
