OH Fresh Meat on the Barbe

I did it. Got a new 09 GT on Wednesday. With the dealer's offering 7K off list
since the 2010's were out , it was hard to pass up. Scary though, new to the
rotor thing. Been driving sport compacts since the 70's, ya I'm a old guy, but
still drive hard. Started in a Datsun 2000 Roadster new off the showroom floor.
Moved up to a Mustang a few years later.( or was that over?) Fast, but only in
one direction, forward. Not to good in a turn. I kept crashing it. Not sure if it
was me or the car. Got married, kids happened, no more sports cars for awhile.
A life time later I found myself in a Honda del Sol Vetc. Up till now, the best car I
have ever owned. Fun, comfortable, nimble. But now worn out after 10 plus years.

Not sure what the RX-8 will bring....
But after a lot of looking around a bit of soul searching its my new bitch.
I wanted a black one but all that was left at the dealer were AT's so I opted for
a Grey GT. Still getting used to it. Mileage sucks but it sure is fun to drive.
Just put in my second tank of gas so I've got a long way
to go to feel her out. Not yet second nature like the Honda.
Can't wait to get it past 1k miles so I can let it go to the red line.

I noticed the oil was down half way
on the dip stick ( quart?) was going to add some 5W20 but noticed the oil filler
is in a location that a missed drip or two might get into the alternator so I need to
get a funnel and keep it with the spare oil in the trunk. Never was a problem it the
Honda, LOL. What a silly place to put the oil filler in a car that use's oil.
So how do you get the oil in and not on the engine? I know, just be carefull. DUH.

Fire suit on, let the flames begin.

I'll try to get some snaps up ASAP.

you mean moved down to a mustang. the datsun 2000 is just sexy.

yes, filling oil in a car that regularly needs oil added, you'd think mazda would have thought that out better.

congrats on the car.

Good work - welcome! I did the same thing. Fun cars while single, practical cars while married. Still married, but as an empty nester with a paid-off mortgage I bought an RX-8.

Funnel is probably the way to go, although I have not done that. I tend to top off when I'm down half a quart. I'll decant half of a fresh bottle into an empty, so that when I go under the hood I'm always pouring from a half bottle, never a full one.

Ken,
half a bottle...good tip. why didn't I think of that.
I just put a quart in the del sol so I can use that.

I'll Keep the del sol for a winter go to work car. Its great in snow as most
front drive's are. Not sure if I will drive the RX-8 in the snow or not but
will get snow tires just in case. I spent 20 years driving rear wheel drive
cars before the front wheel drive came along so I think the snow driving
would not be too bad.

It is not important to add a half quart, don't worry about toping it off till it's past half way down between the low&full. There is 1.8 quarts between those marks. So just add a full quart at that time. The oil is injected in the engine and it will burn more when it is driven harder. This is my seventh rotary since '71 and now being retired I don't drive much and have never had to add oil just change it every 3 to 4 months.

good choice Ive been lovin mine. Im not messin with snow on the summer tires, I actually almost got stuck in a parking spot at a convenience store on an icy plowed surface as cars were coming and going at will I realized I dont want to do this in the 8.

I go at the oil filler from the passenger side, I lean over the fender and can lean the bottle on its side pouring slowly without missing.
