S2kCA @ Harris Hill Road - Saturday, Nov 14th

The Austin chapter of the S2000 Club of America is hosting another one day track day at Harris Hill Road south of Austin.

The track day is scheduled for Saturday, November 14th. Pricing is $155 for S2KCA members and $170 for non-members, and includes lunch!

Registration is open now: Link to registration website

Harris Hill Road is a beautiful, flowing, technical, 1.7 mile road course nestled in the hill country halfway between Austin and San Marcos. Great track for an RX-8!

Hope to see you at the track!

How much track time does the $170.00 get you?

Definitely. Harris Hill is a great track for an RX-8.

Should be at least two hours of seat time over the course of the day, if the last couple of events we've done are any indication.

You won't see my car on the registration list, since I'm instructing at this event.

These events aren't a competition. It's pretty much to get drivers some seat time. Have fun! It'll be my first time out too. I'm sure we will have instructors with us. At least until they feel we are ready to take on the track without instruction.

Altain, I'd appreciate some experienced advice on driving the 8 if I run into you there!

This is not a competition event. This is a high performance driving event. There will be instructors available for all participants. Novice students will be required to have an instructor. There is no additional charge for instruction - it is included in your entry price.

Just make sure that you’ve got decent tread left on your tires, at least half your brake pads left, decent brake fluid, and you’ll be good to go. Also remember to bring some spare oil to the track – I find my car tends to use about a quart over the course of a track day.

Exactly.

Just look for the dark green RX-8 with the bright orange #75 on the side. I’m always happy to offer advice, and you’re welcome to ride along with me during one of the instructor sessions.

Woh, I just remembered about this!

10 spots left and 2 days to register!

I'm thinking this even is doable for me. Quick question: I just register and show up early in the morning? Thats it? Do they tech the car there like they do at autocrosses?

Also, anyone else from here register? I noticed a couple RX8s.

Are spectators allowed? If so what about ride alongs? I'm considering moving into road course racing, and wanna get a feel for it before I commit. I have my own helmet also.

Signed up and ready to go. Should be fun.

Quick question though...do I actually have to pay some ASE technician to look my car over? He won't be tearing into my car like I do every track weekend, so I am not sure what he is supposed to find that I won't see. I track regularly at another facility and they give it their inspection from time to time as well...plus I keep on top of all my fluids and heavy wear items like a hawk. I have dedicated track components (wheels, tires, brake rotors and pads) that I swap out specifically for events like this.

I know my car is more than track worthy....so what kind of "certification" will they be looking for exactly?

I am sure the form is similar to the NASA inspection sheet which is pretty laughable in it's content. Stuff like...mirrors and gas cap attached properly, winshield is not cracked, not missing any lug nuts or your seat belts are not torn and are securely mounted...

yeah...I need an ASE certified tech to check those for me. LOL

The really important stuff is not even on there...it's great that you have more than 50% brake pad left...but can your brakes even handle the job in the first place?...that seems to me the important question to ask. There are alot of cars that can pass this inspection yet still be unsafe for the track.

Hopefully I can get past all the funny looks when I ask if their shop can do (or even heard of) this particular inspection and get it done in time for the event.

Having never been to Harris Hill Road before I thought it a good idea to work out a racing line so I can at least get a feel for the track.
Obviously this does not take into consideration elevations changes, camber or surface conditions...

Enjoy!

Edit:
Here is a link to a revised racing line with consideration given to camber and elevation for turns 2, 3 & 4. Other minor tweaks to the line as well, but won't be able to nail it down until I get some seat time. Looking forward to it!

This is worth the trip from Houston. I did this last Feb? Jan? You'd probably get more out of it if you have done at least 1-2 track days previously.

Make sure you gas up your car a few times throughout the day - I ran into fuel starvation when I had a little more than 1/2 tank left.

As for racing line, try searching for "harris hill road" on youtube, and you get lots of great videos:

I think we got five 20-25 minute sessions when I went.
