i was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to get the switch out of the center console, i cant seem to get it and im scared that if i keep lifting one end it will break.

my reason for doing this is the light either burned out or there is a loose wire and it is bugging the hell out of me.

Remove the console cover and disconnect the connectors to the switches. Then you can release the switches themselves from the back side.

Most of us find that a sharp tug of the shift boot straight up frees the console quickly and easily. Be care not to pull too far tho' as the switch leads aren't that long.

btw: search on AFE short shifter for some pictures of the console removed.

 

Basically, the whole panel lifts up around the shifter. I hope you have a manual and not an auto because im not sure if its different for auto. Credit for this should go to truemagellen:

twist the shift **** counter-clockwise and remove, place somewhere safe. Wrap the head of the flat head screwdriver in electrical tape, wedge in between the front center console piece and the silver accent pieces on the side. Carefully pry up the center piece and pull up an inch or two. Disconnect the heated seat connectors (two, black and white) if you have them, then disconnect the Nav controller connector. Do this by squeezing the sides of the connector and pressing in the side of the clip with your fingernail, all while pulling out at the same time. Place this front center console piece somewhere safe, becareful not to let the underside scratch other parts of the car.

 

I think you can just pop it. My heater light sometimes goes off and I just pop it up with my fingernails. I know, eww. But I don't think you need to take anything off.

 

yea thats what ive been doing, but then one day it just didnt come back on.

 

I have one that goes on and off also. Passenger side switch. I think these are in a bad place to begin with. I always bump them into the on position. I'm going to move mine.

 

yea I went to Mazda the other day and got a replacement bulb. life's good now
