MD 2010 R3 Adding Navigation

Hi All,

I recently purchased a 2010 R3. Navigation is not an option, but I didn't want to give up the driving features and get a Grand Touring.

However, I'm sure there is a way of adding navigation to the car. Since this interior is almost identical to the '09 interior, I was wondering if anyone had done this or knows how to do it.

The Receiver slot should be the same, so maybe I can purchase the OEM Mazda RX-8 navigation system, but I haven't found that for sale.

There may also be third-party additions? Any ideas?

As far as adding the OEM Navigation system, IF it is the same as in the 04-08 cars you'd actually need to swap out the entire interior wiring harness with the version that came in cars w/ Nav in addition to buying the navigation parts. The navigation parts are tied into many different parts of the wiring (I'm trying to remove it all, which is quite a pain to do without making other things not work!). Of course, it is possible that the new ones have all the wiring preinstalled, but if not the usual consensus on the older RX8s was to go aftermarket unless you're comfortable with taking the entire interior apart.

I'm not sure how to much it will take to flip out the stock radio on the 09+ but I can tell you that the pre-09 have a completely differant radio and nav system, so you'll need one from the 09+. I would check the dealership first but my guess is it'll be like 3k+ plus, I think it is about a 2k option from when I was shopping for my 09. I'm not sure what wiring it'll need but I doubt it's going to be much differant then the stock since I think it's all built into the stock radio slot. Finding a used unit will be tough because there jsut aren't that many out there period and on top of that finding one for sale will be even tougher. I doubt using the current setups with the fliptop nav hood for a custom install will work too because of the bluetooth mic in the center section.

Yeah, I knew the 09+ Nav was different than the earlier models. That's a good point about the flip-up custom, I didn't think about the bluetooth module being in the center. I wonder if there are replacement panels designed for it?

Why not just get a portable nav unit? Much less of a hassle

I'm not a big fan of having something sitting on top of my dash. I'm trying to have a cleaner look.

about the only option I see outside buying one from the dealer I would think you would have to get a indash aftermarket radio/nav and custom make the faceplate since I THINK it's differant and something like the metra kit won't work(It might, I've not looked into it exactly)

I mentioned it to the dealer, but the people I talked to didn't seem to have any clue. They basically said, that they don't add them at the dealership anymore and they only come installed from the factory. So I guess they're out of the loop.

A metra kit would work for an aftermarket stereo, but it doesn't appear they have one for the 09-10 models.

you could always call metra and ask em if they are working on sth for the 09s and if they will be putting sth out soon that would be my best bet otherwise i think you would have to buy the 09 nav from a gt and switch it to the r3 that shouldnt be too tough to do
