Hey guys im from toronto and looking to get an Rx8 soon. I did some searching around on the forum and found out that if you want HID ...that your car is going to have headlight washers. Im looking to get a 2007 if it makes any difference. I have 3 questions for you guys :

1) I wanna make sure this is absolutely true.... Does every 8 that has HID also has headlight washers in canada (im asking in terms of every year ? if not please mention what year does not have the hw )

2) I personally dont like the look of the headlight washers . Do you guys that have it .... see that it takes away from the front bumper's overall look? Or its not very noticeable ?

3) Like i said im not a fan of the HW. So do you guys think getting an 8 with just halogens (if there is such a thing with the gt package) and then getting an HID conversion kit would be a god idea to avoid the HW??

1.) Nope.... the 06 Shinka my brother and I have does not have headlight wipers but it has HID's

2.) We have non-functional washers, which is worse ><

3.) not sure, your call..... I suppose you can also buy the HID lights from OEM.... (which will cost a ton of $$)

 

Ummm you're wrong... I have an 06 Shinka and i've got the headlight washers.

What do you mean by "non functional" could it be that yours are just broken....

 

ALL RX8s sold in canada have headlight washers. with or without HIDs they all have it. ALL rx8s sold south of the border do not have headlight washers and are equipped with TPMS instead (tire pressure monitoring system) which is not available on canadian sold cars.

It is really not a big deal. in fact, I only notcie cars that dont have them as it looks weird (unless its the mazdaspeed bumper which would look weird with headlight washers). As for the functional non functional, i would venture a guess that epmty265 means like the ones that come on some of the older volvos and whatnot with the actual wiper blade as well. our setup is really a usesless and rediculous system in my opinion. Most people wtih 8s will keep the car clean enough to make this system completely irrelevant.

empty, does your car have two body coloured shapes that look stuck on the front of your bumper right under the headlight? that is the headlight washer system. it simply sprays washer fluid onto the headlight lens. there is no linkage invovled. You will most likely never notice it work. it only sprays once in a drive cycle if the headlights are on and you spray the washer. since this will likely be at night in the rain the chances of you noticing this are slim unless you are looking for it. The other option is that the car is american or the slim chance that the bumper was replaced with an american (non washer) from bumper without the holes and the body shop removed the parts and plugged the lines.

 

Actually... let me rephrase:


Our Shinka has the headlight washer assembly, but it does not work.

Upon pulling the washer out, it's there but non-functional.

Upon reaching inside, it does not seem to be connected.... so either it was removed or it was never installed to begin with...


Maybe I should check it out if I take off the bumper...

 

how can you reach inside? the washer jet assemblies arent exactly readily accessable. How sure are you that they dont work? Alot of people seem to claim they dont work but actually they do.
The system will not function if the washer fluid is below a certain point. This is because the headlight washers work on a fluid pressure/volume system. Basically, it is the fluid volume and pressure being forced through the jets that eject them from the bumper to spray on the headlight and a spring keeps them closed the rest of the time. Because it uses so much fluid, the pump was mounted in the washer fluid jug in such a way that it will not use up all your reamaining washer fluid so that you still have some for the windsheild where its most important.

Note, it will only work with the headlights in the ON postion. It will only automatically spray the first time you use the washers with the headlights on. it will not spray again until you turn the car off and back on OR you can double pull the washer trigger with the headlights on and it will spray for a short time as well whenever you want.

Its really annoying becaues the amount of fluid it uses drains the jug very quickly.

RotaryGreg youve brought up some good points about it being useless and all. This is only leading me to not want them even more. but i guess theres no way out of it. LIke you said all Canadian RX8s have it. Just gotta deal with it . I just hope it doesnt look THAT bad in person on a BB. Ive seen some on titanium greys and velocity reds and there not THAT bad but well see. Another thing i was worried about was.... body kits. Say i wanna go for a mazdaspeed ... how does that work ... ive seen people do it ... they just take out the pipes and stuff but it just doesnt feel right. Anyways thats alot guys.

 

i wouldn't worry about the bodykits dude... all you're really doing with that is you disconnect the washerhose to the front bumper assembly.. let it gush washerfluid for awhile.. once enough has drained you take a plug of some sort (I used a large bolt, zip ties, and some tape) and plug up the end of the hose attached to the car. Doesn't damage anything.. and since it's not a perminate thing you can just unplug it easily... like say when winter comes around >_<

 

Like rotarygreg said, all cars come with the headlight spray system if sold in Canada. You can hardly notice it as it is hidden until the actual jets come out to spray the lights, then they go back in to the bumper.

In terms of how they work, the work only when headlights are on and on every 5th wash cycle of the windshield, or on a double pull of the trigger.

Mazda put these on the Canadian market 8's to help with snow buildup. It's not so much for dirty headlights but for lazy people who just can't be bothered to clear the snow off of their cars properly before driving. Washer fluid sprayed on lights which helps to clear the snow off and let the light shine through.

Mine haven't sprayed since the day I picked up the car 6 years ago. Just pull the fuse. Why over-complicate things by plugging lines, pulling out mechanisms etc?

As for the looks, honestly, I forget the things are even there.

 

Ye i dont think its very noticeable until you come close to the car. Anyways thanks for your help guys its greatly appreciated
