Torque converter?Anyone upgrade yet?

Well Ive been reading up as well as saving up and have yet to find anyone with an AT 8 go with a better torque converter...that i know of. I theoretically have enough $ to go FI if I were to buy it used, but im taking the responsible/ boring route in case something were to go wrong and keeping that money safe, to do it right and with enough money in case of a KABOOM incident. So long story short im splurging by about $1000-minus the cost of a certain midpipe BHR FTW. So basically cant decide between the torque converter of something like the spray.

Heres a few sites offering TQ converters, labor would not be an issue*

http://aceconverter.com/index.php?ma...roducts_id=197

http://www.levelten.com/SearchResult...3&Redirected=Y

any insight on whether the TQ converter is really worth it? or not just yet?

This is why i say go with Level Ten

About Level 10 Level 10 got started way back in 1971. Pat Barrett working out of the garage at his home realized early on the best way to go fast was to make the most of the available horsepower and the transmissions of the day just were not up to the task. He began experimenting with valve bodies and clutches and soon had a strong fast shifting slip-free Trans, and the word began to spread.
The reputation grew almost instantly and he opened his first shop in 1973, and made his hobby officially a business.
With his Transmissions now working the big problem became the torque converter, they just couldn’t take the power the race engines were making. Pats answer to this was to build a bullet proof TH-400 modified to use a clutch instead of a converter. Not satisfied He managed to modify a converter to handle the power and the racing world took notice.
In 1975 Pat was appointed director of the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association - Liberty States Chapter. This was nothing short of amazing for a two year old business.
Pats work slowly changed from the “standard” high performance Trans to ones that were custom tuned for specific vehicles. Then in 1992 Pat shocked the drag racing world with the first Buick Grand National to run seven second quarter miles.
In 1993 Pat was contacted by Bin Sulayem Performance, the largest aftermarket supplier in the middle east. He began producing special purpose transmissions to there specifications for the MBS Expeditions and continues this to this day.
In 2001 Pat stepped into the road racing world and once again set the standard when he teamed up with Lexus. He developed a manual shift automatic that won the Rolex Cup in 2002.
Level 10 is now the largest supplier of import valve bodies, and distributes to more than 30 countries. We have so many wins in so many different kinds of racing even we have stopped counting.
In 2003 we began development for diesel trucks, with proven packages now available to handle the ground shaking torque of these monsters.
That kind of innovation continues to this day with constant testing and improvement. Pat will never be satisfied, always looking for a little more speed, a little less friction, a little more strength, and better power transfer. And don’t forget the one who benefits the most from all this effort………… you !

As far as being AT, and only sending in my Torque conver, what kind of gains can I expect? Acceleration? Low end, or Top end? I have had a buddy tell me about replacing my torque converter, but never knew they actuallly had them in production (well made to order in this case)

Call up level ten tell them your goals for the car like more power in the low end. Talk to the experts. I only upgraded my transmission since the oem one burnt up on my and it was either pay to get the stock rebuild or pay a few bucks more to get there performance transmission that is bulletproof with a 3yr 50k warranty

Why don't you get shift kits? Unless there isn't any for the rx-8...

I'd like to get one for my Mazda 6 though, you can tell it want's to burn 2nd gear, but it can't since it slips so much.

I sent emails to both companies listed in the first post regarding stall rates of the converters they offer and didn't get a response from either. I will try calling rotary performance tomorrow if work isn't too busy. What rpm can you launch at invasion08?

I keep forgetting this, but Chris at rx7.com (Rotary Performance) told me about a year ago that he knew a guy that had made a shift kit for his AT RX-8. I will email him to see if he has any more info.
